what's wrong with computer mice?

I don't do much 3D modelling lately, but 2D a lot, and a basic Logitech M110s mouse for, like, 15 euro does the job and stays alive for years. There are versions with extra buttons, but with the same shape for sure. I don't have too large hands, but for me, fancy ''ergonomic'' shapes are awkward and wireless mice are a nuisance.

Tbh I can't imagine working in 2D with the keyboard clit, let alone in 3D

I'm a fan of Razer's mice tbh, in the last 12 or so years I've had 3 mice, a Razer Abyssus that had the left mouse button crack after receiving blunt-force trauma, a Logitech G502 that had the scroll wheel die after a few months, and my current Razer Viper V2, which I've had for a good few years now and works like the day I bought it. So in my experience, they have been worth the money

I've been using a kensington expert trackball instead of a mouse for about half a year now.

It takes a bit to get used to, but once you do it's like as close to a keyboard that a mouse gets, which is what I want.

Get the wireless one. I have both, and the wired one has some weird firmware issues.

I've used basically every mouse under the sun. Old Intellimouse Explorers, Microsoft SideWinder (yes, the one with the cylindrical back and forward buttons vertically aligned with each other), Surface Arc Mouse, Apple Magic Mouse, Logitech MX518, G9X, G502, MX Ergo trackball, Glorious Model O and D, and basically every damn Razer ever, but mostly a succession of Deathadders that eventually shit themselves way too early.

I currently use an Xlite Pulsar. It's honestly way more rugged than most other mice I've used with the exception of the SideWinder, which just would not die no matter what, and, like most Microsoft products, was probably suffering from some form of demonic possession.

I miss those cyborg r.a.t. mice that had a great thumb scroll wheel and where extremely adjustable with the movable palm, swappable sidings and even weights. Sadly they got bought by madcatz and that's the end of that story. Lots of mice copied the thumb rest but I haven't found one that had the incredibly comfortable pinky rest.

I used to do the thrift store mouse thing, but I've found that the mice I've been getting don't work right any more. Thrift store keyboards are still bae (the old Lenovo-IBM models still soldier on), but I picked up a Steelseries Prime+ Gaming Mouse for <$30 at some surplus store and I've never used a mouse this good.

Word to the wise. I've used thumb trackballs for years and they can fuck up your thumbs as well as regular mice fuck up your wrists. Are they somewhat better than regular mice? Who knows. But those people who claim they are perfectly ergonomically safe haven't used them like all that much and are probably repeating misinformation they've heard from other similarly ignorant people. I switched to vertical mice. I hope I finally found something thats truly better but we'll see.
I've been using the same thumb trackball for...24 years and have never had any problems, personally. I'm sure it comes down to the ergonomics of the specific user, but I've never heard of anyone having those kinds of problems with them, anecdotally.

In my opinion, where thumb trackballls properly shine is on the go with laptops.
This was how I got started with mine. Kept using it when I moved from the "desktop replacement" laptop (aka lap-based hovercraft) back to a real desktop.

I've used almost everything also. Thanks for the Pulsar suggestion, I might get one. I never heard of the brand before.

I'm personally using a Logitech G305 which despite being a bit of a budget model works quite well. It's reliable, comfortable and seems more durable than their more expensive models. A friend of mine suggested a Logitech MX Master 2S not too long ago and I bought one but found it to be shit (it seems like something for laptop users I guess).

For those of your jonesing for an MX518//519 they sell plenty of them on Amazon as OEM or even refurbished units. But they're not very cheap. They do last for ages though and are one of the best mice out there still.
edit: it turns out the OEM MX518s aren't a thing anymore but Logitech has a refreshed version and judging from the reviews its just as good as the original. But it is like $110 USD so not a budget model.

I'm currently using a Zowie FK2-C which worked great until it suddenly started disconnecting for 2 seconds at a time and sometimes completely disconnecting until I unplug and plug it back in the USB port. I looked it up, and apparently this one model had a single batch that has a hardware flaw that causes this, and they had a program to get a new one or something that ended back in 2022, at least a year before I bought this one that's apparently from the same batch, so fuck me I guess.

I do really like how light it is and the cloth cable is nice, but I wouldn't get another one because of this.

I got a lower end version of one of those razer light up "gamer" mice a while back. There's fucking datamining if you wanna change the colors, you have to log in with an account and everything. The texture on the scroll wheel is best described as "crunchy".

I love trackball ergo mice. No wrist movement. Ultra comfy. Can be used to play tactics autism games easily too. Everyone hates, but unless you really need the precision of a laser mouse, the comfort is another level.
