Where are you in the event of societal collapse after an alien invasion?

Aliens are invading, killing people en masse, and all forms of communications are cut off. The aliens aren't smart enough to tell if you are dead or not if you just layed flat in rubble, inside cars, and along other corpses. Survival is feasible if you layed low, but dealing with other humans is a problem because of attacks and looting. There are encampments of people inside remaining structurally sound buildings, some people choose to live in cars and form caravans, some remain in their old homes and defend against looters. You can't make too much noise and movement in the open or the aliens will notice you and kill you.
