Where were you during 9/11

I just started first grade a few days before; the teachers did their best to soften the news for us, and then we had two half days (although some kids were pulled out). I don't remember much aside from a neighbor telling my mom and briefly watching the footage when I got home, at least before I got distracted by my toys. The next week, the school ended up doing a UNICEF donation project where we wore Uncle Sam hats and went through our neighborhoods collecting funds.

It didn't help that I lived not too far away from the city, although in a suburban area.

I was in high school in 10th grade. During my english class they made an announcement on the loudspeaker that the twin towers were attacked. Everyone went dead silent, partially because nobody knew how to react they were so shocked. The class i had after english was social studies (a.k.a. history), and the teacher brought a TV in the room so we could watch live what was happening. All of us saw the second plane hit the other tower and then the first one crumble as everyone was running away from it.

I was in 1st period (history class) during 8th grade. On the bus to school a bunch of us had a funny feeling about that day, one girl even said "today's date is 9/11, wouldn't it be crazy if something bad happened?"

Anyways, during class, a lady pulled the teacher out of the classroom, and two minutes later he came back in and told us one of the twin towers fell. I was thinking it tumbled over due to some sort structural flaw, or something (they didn't tell us how or why). Then sometime later they told us that both towers were hit by planes, and we were all sent home around 11am or noon (i think).

Got home and watched what happened on TV, and then me and my best friend went out later riding bikes, and looking up seeing all these helicopters flying around.

We all went to school the next day, talking about the craziness. I don't think we did any schoolwork that whole week.

I was at my Grandparent's house. I was supposed to be at school, but I had the day off sick.

I seem to recall that the initial reporting was strongly implying that it was some kind of terrible accident, and everyone at the time seemed really confused about how such a thing could possibly have happened: could the pilots have fallen asleep, or something? Then, the second plane struck the second tower, and that's when things got very surreal indeed. I don't think I'll ever forget how I felt at that moment. It was like a horrific version of deja vu, only with the added realization that what I was watching had been done deliberately.

My 10-year-old mind couldn't quite wrap my head around why somebody would purposefully fly a plane into a building. I wasn't old enough to remember the IRA bombings, and the word "terrorist" was then unknown to me. It definitely opened my eyes to the world.

Was in school just a across the river from Manhattan, the principal came in and said excuse me sorry to interrupt but we just heard that a plane has hit the world trade center at first like many people we assumed it was an accident and tried to move on with class ...by the time the second plane hit and it became clear something was very wrong the school began calling out parents to send us home. Being a young dumb kid who was just happy to be out of school early I had no idea how serious the situation was. I didn't even know the towers had collapsed till later that afternoon since all I did once I got home was fire up my playstation and watch cartoon network (since Nick jr was still on)

I didn't lose any family that day thankfully but the reality of what the world would become shortly after was right around the corner...oh and my dad was in the army at the time...so it wasn't long before he got called into service overseas

I was just waking up to get ready for school. (Elementary school) I walked out to the living room to and saw that the tv was on the news. Then the second tower was hit. My mom was on the sofa and let out a gasp. She then noticed I was there, turned off the tv and got me all ready for school. I don't remember much about what went on at school other than it was very, very quiet. I vaguely remember her just saying there was disaster happening in NY but she didn't get into the details. My teacher just got us started with some work sheets and she spent the rest of the day at her desk listening to the radio.

It was 8th grade, I want to say maybe history class and an announcement came over the PA that NYC was attacked but that was it. After that, things pretty much went on as normal as far as I can remember and when I got home from school the rest of the devastation was on TV. Since this was in the days before any of us had cell phones, let alone smart phones. I imagine any news of what was going on was relegated solely to the teachers and they didn't say much. It's rather strange knowing one of those planes was hijacked right in our airspace and ended up involved in that attack.

What sucked was that our school trip to DC the next month was canceled due to terrorists and I didn't get to visit again for five years. Even then I thought that was dumb but this was also during the era where a lot of people were afraid and we were supposed to duct-tape our windows against anthrax. This was also around the time the Great Lakes Mall (where I played MTG at the time) implemented its anti-terrorism plans as if they were just waiting to attack a small mall in NEO.

I was in 4th grade. Since I lived on the west coast at the time, the towers were gone by the time I got up. My mom did wake me up to tell me something happened though. I think we did see some coverage on a TV in class, but that was over by like 10am my time. I don't think I understood the gravity of the situation at the time.

Working. My partner came by, and said "come look at this shit" and we watched the footage for a couple hours in the break room.

I remember a colleague trying to call family in NYC and not getting through until that night. Phones were down.

I seem to recall that the initial reporting was strongly implying that it was some kind of terrible accident, and everyone at the time seemed really confused about how such a thing could possibly have happened: could the pilots have fallen asleep, or something? The time between the planes was when we started watching the news. People kept coming in to watch, asking if it was a bomb, an accident. The attempted van bombing was on people's minds. Then the second plane hit, all bets were off.

At the time I was in 8th grade and at school. First class had just started, there was an announcement, they took the classes into auditoriums, libraries, and the gym to watch the news live.

Working my shit retail job and hiding in the back on the computer.

I first learned about the WTC attack from a thread posted on the fuckedcompany.com forums about an explosion there and people panicking. I thought it was a joke.

A few minutes later I saw on TV that it wasn't. The rest of the day there was pretty quiet.

Playing videogames. I switched off the console & flipped to some TV before bed. It was right after the first plane hit & the news stations were covering it.
Ok I’m from Australia. It’s unusual to see your TV have a full live feed of a US station like this. You only saw that stuff in movies ..
Last time it was from the UK after Diana but we got parallel local newsreaders & break ins. Not this time. Maybe cause it was late at night or I was watching the government channel?

I thought at first “ok what’s this shit low budget late night TV movie on?” It was kind of showing a quick catch-up & theory of what may have happened & as I thought ‘ok this is lingering now’ ...

Plane 2 hit.

Suddenly a barrage of AIM bells started going off from friends in the USA (nyc) and that’s when yeah ok shit just got real.

Some days I can’t remember how many cups of coffee I’ve had but I can remember every minute detail of those 2 minutes.

Shocking.

There’s a news clip of one of the readers saying “this looks to be on purpose” that you’d see in every 9/11 documentary and I dunno it just seems like the stupidest most obvious line ever uttered on TV.

I was in NYC in the late 90s and wandering around (no google maps) and I remember I’d walked all the way down to the water then with nowhere further to go veered to the right and suddenly looked up & saw these. They looked interesting. So I took my ‘distance photo’ and made my way down there. Didn’t realise till I got down there it was the WTC ...
