Estonia. It had the best standard of living in the USSR, and the islands are stunningly beautiful.

I once heard it stated that the ethnic Romanian population stagnated while the Gypsy/Roma population greatly exploded during this period. I have not seen any citations on this, but if true, it would partly explain why Romania is a Gypsy haven.
 
Czechoslovakia. I’m part Czech and spoke it well as a child but forgot all of it. Yugoslavia would be cool too before the death of Tito. Nowadays maybe Viet Nam.

I would assume Vietnam doesn't count as Eastern Bloc. I'm gonna be boring and say either Czechoslovakia like everyone else on the thread or Estonia.
 
Czech Republic hands down. That's where my paternal line comes from. I have brick wall when it comes to that branch of the family tree. It's also a very picturesque country.
 
Any answer other than Czechoslovakia is wrong. The only way any other would be preferable is if you're a tankie.
 
Yugoslavia because there would still be some western ideas such as a market and there would be more openness to the west.

Yugoslavia was better on the account of telling USSR to fuck off.
Even if you were from Czechoslovakia, going through Yugoslavia was one of the best ways to escape the East. No having to risk getting shot or arrested at the borders, and getting there was infinitely easier than getting to any non-socialist country.

Sure, Czechoslovakia during the Spring was the best, but that was very brief because Dubček got completely addicted to popularity and didn't fucking realize the country isn't in a vacuum. Shit got really quick back into tankie territory with 70s and from then on all the thaw from that was due to the omnipresent decay of everything.

Could @Male Idiot speak to the accuracy of this article? There's also this fierce indictment of Kádár's regime courtesy of Titkolt Ellenállás. Exaggerations or are there some basis to these claims?

I was told by my late grandpa on my dad's side that we have some Polish our family tree so I guess Poland. I'd likely be eating Polish food and getting smuggled goods from the black market the USSR doesn't like.
 
Czechosłowacja because Czechs like jokes and fucking and the grass is greener on the other side (Communist Poland wasn't half bad but Poles take themselves too seriously for my tastes and complain all the fucking time.)

Yugoslavia, hopefully near the Mediterranean beaches.
We always envied them in Romania during the commie era, they came and sold products here, as a child, what they brought was paradise-like. Their TV could be caught over the border, and it alone was in another class, we had only one state TV station that ended each night at 8PM or so in patriotic hymns and it was full commie propaganda. Literally nobody watched it, and everyone knew it was a lie, if you think media distrust in high in the West, should've seen the distrust in the late 80s in Romania. Everyone lied and everyone knew everyone lies. All was fake, the industry numbers, the population statistics, the full store shelves seen on TV, the number of buildings constructed, the cars being built. Apples and fruit on stands at Ceausescu's inspections were often props to look better. Diplomas were fake.

In other words, Ceausescu's Romania was a nationwide Potemkin village.
 
I've always been a fan of Ceausescu's Romania because he was a great visionary. He was there to play off the West, China, and USSR while pretending to be friends with the Soviets. Had his own nuclear program and everything. His ideology was great since it was literally WE WUZ DACIANZ WHO WUZ ROMANZ and was inspired by Juche. He was also a great feminist and was going to put his wife and/or daughter in charge since his son was a crazy alcoholic who probably grew up having drinking contests with Kim Jong-il.

Definitely one of history's underrated figures. I wish I could've been there to help his regime survive because things would've been a blast (and I mean literally) come the 90s.
