No actually, I just know what I taste, which is a chalky bitterness that gives me heartburn, whereas other bourbons give a clean alcohol bite and smooth vanilla aftertaste. All in the eye of the beholder for sure.

Tennessee or Kentucky corn whiskey. Straight. No chaser.
None of that over commercialized, apple pie crap like Old Smokey.

Sweet feed whiskey, made from a mix of oats, wheat and molasses that is usually feed to horses. Has a slightly sweet, earthy flavor. Hard to find stuff.

Went hipster for a while and only drank what whiskey's I could find distilled locally. I was never disappointed.

Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey is my favorite so far.

Used to drink a lot of bourbon (yeah a LOT!) But as I've gotten older, darker booze doesn't agree with me as well as it used to. Had to migrate to vodka. But, I have these around and unopened. Jack Daniels Holiday Select, all four years - 2011, 12, 13, and 14. Plus a bottle of Jack Daniels Sinatra unopened.

The Holiday Select was unique in that it was selected by JD's master distiller and all the barrels were used to build a whiskey barrel Christmas Tree on the lawn in front of the distillery in Lynchburg. Got to see it the first year they did it. If you ever get the chance, DEFINITELY take the tour of the Jack Daniels Distillery. It's fascinating and full of history. Holiday Select was a very limited run each year (if you can even find any now) and searches show it currently retailing at about $500 - $1200 a bottle. I should probably sell them. More likely, I'll have everybody do a toast with them at my funeral. Just one of those weird things I've collected over the years.

"Retail" on hard to find bottles is, in my experience, about 30% higher than actual on black market. Just a heads up if you decide to sell on FB.

Tanks! That's part of the problem, though. It's fine to sell empty bottles, but eBay and others have restrictions about selling alcohol at all. Then, the issue of shipping it because most carriers won't (flammability concerns). It would have to be to a private collector or perhaps local through Craig's List or something. I have a lot of rare tequila that falls into that same category. Sold one bottle for $500 to a collector that knew exactly what it was worth and had to have it.

I'm quite deep into another bottle of Jefferson Ocean, and fuck me it's always worth the price. Been listening to music and pressing ammo while shit posting.

I've a shelf with all the obvious ones - Lagavulin, Glenlivet, Jack Daniels (purely as a mixer) and some Yamazaki.

My go-to is probably Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold. I'm sure you could make fun of it for some reason or another, but it's just an incredibly smooth whisky.

For those with experience, what's the deal with Maker's Mark whiskey? I've heard Josh mentioning it in a mildly derisive manner. Is it bad and overpriced, or is it just a common whiskey that idiots try and look sophisticated with, despite being a common brand?

It's somewhat overrated and has that pretentious wax seal to look fancy, but it's a reasonably good low-middle range whiskey. I find it a trifle sweet for my tastes. In the same general range of bourbons, I'd prefer Bulleit slightly. There's really nothing wrong with Maker's Mark itself, though, it's just funny because of its association with the Gunt and other pretentious douchebags because of its marketing.

Adding some personal opinion to what @AnOminous said: I didn't really find it any better than Four Roses (Yellow Label). Not even the 5% more ABV makes any difference. It isn't bad just overpriced, somewhat pretentious, and mild.

I need some help on recommendations for alternatives for popular whiskeys. If you weren’t able to find Woodford Reserve or your favorite bourbon, what would taste similar to it?

In favor of practically anything, I'd usually get Wild Turkey 101. But for something like Woodford Reserve if you wanted something like that? That could easily be a job for Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, Bulleit, or any other number of similarly popular whiskeys.

It depends why you want Woodford Reserve specifically.

Recently I've been enjoying a bottle of the Makers Mark Special Reserve which is a 56.1 percent cask strength bourbon. They also add some extra oak staves to the barrel for some more flavour. It's basically Makers Mark 46 (their offering that is pricier than the standard Makers Mark). On the back of the bottle they show the different oak staves that they put in it like toasted mocha, french cuvee. At first I wasn't the biggest fan oft his dram, it's a bit young and tastes almost a bit like Irish pot still in terms of the funkiness of the flavour. It doesn't have an age statement so I guess it might be a bit young? Kind of underwhelming if they just added staves to Makers Mark 46 and bottled it at cask strength. You get the classic sweetness from the corn bourbon. This might be a bit sacrilegious to say but I found this best enjoyed with a block of ice. The ice mellows it out and mutes some of the hot alcohol taste so you can enjoy the tasty oak notes in the background. 85/100
