Because mental illness, lack of self awareness and poor socialization is never the issue. Since everyone is "mean nazi transphobes" for questioning their mental state, and giving them nasty looks while they feel cute in that super mini skirt they got....staying on the computer where they can pose as whomever they want to, is the best/ easiest solution. Hence why you see so many jannying for free, programming, and in other computer related professions.

if you're a programmer, chances are that you are a low status weirdo introvert autist nerd to begin with. the job also means that you spend a LOT of time on the internet just for work, and probably even more in your free time (because nerd)

When you mix an inability to really differentiate interpersonal shit (aka low EQ) and make them watch anime or have them realize they didn't conform to normal societal standards as a male, they think "oh i must be a female, specifically this anime female who was written by a male for male audience" instead of "oh im just different". This is also why they have the worst stereotypes about women and hate women, because they're men poorly larping.
It's a clear match.
