Why are podcasts still called "podcasts"?

The etymology of the word "podcast" is that its a portmanteau of the words iPod and broadcast. It originated in 2004 and probably made sense back when it was first thought of as iPods were relatively new. Now in 2022 the iPod has been discontinued which kinds of makes the term "podcast" dated. Maybe something like "audiocast "could be used which would keep the "cast" part of the word while also not making it dated when some piece of tech is no longer around.

Since I was little, I never listened to podcasts and used Winamp. I often find myself still using the term "Shoutcast" for talk shows, satellite radio, and internet radios. For individual streamers, I just use the term "stream" or "live talk show". I don't think the term podcast is ingrained into culture as much as "livestream" is.

Why do people call recording something with their phones "filming?" No film is involved. Most of the people doing this have probably never used photographic film of any sort.

Some creators of competing audio players did try to support podcasts on their devices without using the word "podcast," instead giving them some other name, but obviously those campaigns went nowhere.

It's all just streaming, which has no water or river causeway involvement. I don't like podcast but if a billion mouthbreathers use the damn word you might as well get with the program.

Because they think saying "I'm filming" or even "I'm taping" rolls off the tongue a lot better than "I'm non-volitiling"

A part of it is that podcast is a short catchy term, calling them internet talk shows might be more accurate, but it's longer and doesn't roll off the tongue that well.

I think it's because the word podcast has become so entrenched in our vernacular that it would be hard to change it at this point. I mean, sure, we could start calling them "vlogs" or something else, but then everyone would just be confused and wouldn't know what we're talking about. Plus, I don't think Joe Rogan would be too happy if we started changing the name of his show!
