Fun fact is that most of the extra insane PNW BS only arose in the last 1-2 decades. Spending half of my childhood there, I want to blame migrants who couldn't afford San Francisco and bought into the Cascadia/Pacifica utopia BS. However, the population growth in the PNW from migration is ASTRONOMICAL and a major reason for the culture we're seeing now. Locals either ignored this emerging culture (becoming irrelevant and/or leaving) or bought into it loving the new clout (the Wern and Reddit fags for example). Before 2010, Portland Oregon had a plan to eliminate homelessness. That went sideways faster than I could finish college and now the city embraces it's "non-traditional" populations.
Another theory has to do with the weather. It's gray and overcast ALL THE TIME, which has been shown to mess with people (especially migrants). When I was a kid, my parents would joke the reason Microsoft and Amazon started in Seattle was due to people unable to play outside. This may be more fact than fiction: the climate encourages being terminally online more than anywhere else on the West Coast. This could explain older proto-cows like Kurt Cobain and others (along with the liberalism and being cheaper/isolated from the Bay Area -- think Humboldt County in CA and the weed/drug disappearances). Granted, the climate in the PNW is WAY milder than elsewhere, the combination of climate, liberalism, connection to tech, and being relatively new to Western settlement, the PNW has become a perfect storm of shit.
The whole thing is sad, because I just came back from visiting family in the PNW last week. The landscapes and environment is gorgeous and deserves much better from humans...

Keep in mind, while Seattle is fucked, the outer areas like Kent, Puyallup, and Snohomish are nice, and east of the Cascades its actually right wing as fuck.

A lot of reasons.
- In the 1840s the US government pushed to expand US territory to the West Cost. To populate the land a long the way, they provided intensives for people to move out there. Nothing special, but if you were the first to a new piece of land you'd a few hectares. If you run a business or are a professional, you really can't leave your supply lines and business contacts back in New England to run off and try your luck on the Oregon Trail, so the only people who took the government's land scheme were good-for-nothings back home in New England. This sets the trend of charters who would be peopling the Western Continental US.
- By the end of the 19th century, the trans-continental railroad had been completed at it wasn't the desperate sentence of disconnect for civilization if you were going to move West. No one who panned for gold during the gold rush ever made any real money and that what the did manage was quickly sold to pay for life's necessities. The people who did make money were the merchants that build up around the gold rush communities, same as in the Canadian gold rush in Yukon where the the first Trump, who immigrated from Bavaria, made his money running a bar and hotel.
- By the 1950s the West Cost was nothing special and would often be the ridicule of New Engenders who didn't like the time zone differences. From after the war on ward to now a trickle of white-collar workers followed the Film Industry and by 1960 with the transistor intervened, a new wave of immigration was set to hit the West. In the 20th century those who move out West, like 100 years before, were looking to get out of what they had in the East and from the East's point of view were ancillary and welcomed to leave. So you have a melting pot of Mexicans, Retards from the East part gullible gold planners and part '50s East Cost rejects, and Tech Heads who want to create Cylons and Cyborgs. What you get is a mix or artistic types and gullible people who will take sweet words hand and first over anything of substance.
- And breed they did. You are looking at the genetic material of Artists, Simple Laborers, Spaniards. (I don't need to show off the joke that is most of South America, so I take you know what that means) The results are neurotic, dis-functional, fagifaschist flag waving, inter-section-ally psychotic children. Children who have been given educations for jobs that have been replaced by computers, while there parents thought a white collar job was waiting for their kids at the end of a mortar hat. In truth, a bunch of kids traded their financial futures, miss lead by their equally mentally ill parents, who are facing homelessness and incarceration for nu-paid tuition-loans. The homelessness comes from the cyberizaiton of the job market combined with no-personal-responsibility culture gives rise to quickly changing job markets and slow and lax to react employees. The current mess is a product of bad culture and bad genetics which selected for this broken revolting society that the West Cost has become.

As a non-American I know my opinion on this probably doesn't count for much, but the north-west always felt a lot more cultureless and less distinct than the rest of the country. Like, if you asked me to imagine the culture of, say, New England or the South I could paint a fairly vivid picture of what those places are like in my mind based on architecture, traditional dress, customs and so on. But Oregon? Washington State? There's just nothing. It's actually pretty remarkable how absent of traditions or culture those places seem to be.
The only things I can even think of are the Seattle Space Needle and Nirvana, but that would be like if the only things people could think when they were asked to picture London are the BT Tower and The Who. Are these places really that culturally barren? If so, that might explain the nihilistic and stroppy attitude the young people in these places have today.

Very interesting, but I would like to hear about folk from the South and Midwest who moved out west (you can't blame New Englanders). SoCal had tons of Oklahomans and Midwesterners (among others) migrate before the world wars (often bringing goats, as I remember family telling me as a kid). Having blood in those groups (and no Cinema Roberto blood thank Jesus), we built the West Coast up and had such high hopes for the land. Was it the culture or our blood to blame I wonder?

The cost of living is also extremely high. 47% more than Houston. Only places like San Fran cost more. That helps push people into homelessness and drug abuse.
Seattle is hell. There are heroin junkies on every corner, screaming at lampposts, rocking back and forth on the sidewalk, and having impassioned conversations with thin air.
The city doesn’t give a fuck. Vagrants and bums and druggies everywhere. Hell, they give them clean needles and tell them where they can shoot up.

...and Portland is catching up. Everyone likes to joke about how Oregon and Washington compete with each other, but both places are part of the PNW cultural area and are going to shit compared to ~10 years ago. Cost of living used to not be this bad and people moved to the PNW because it was different and new...
