Why are they called "representatives"?

So there's congressional and other stuff this fall. If a politician wins an area 55-45 (or even less than a plurality), they don't "represent" anything and will either toe the party line and tell everyone else to eat shit, or be labeled as some maverick/traitor.

Why are they called "representatives" again?

You can't represent the opinions of everyone in your district. The way it is supposed to work is that a representative campaigns on his ideals and if he wins that means that he majority of people in his district hold the same ideals and so he should represent them. From there it goes into territory that would take a few pages to explain. Our system was never meant to satisfy everyone. That's an impossibility and the founders knew that. It's set up to make the most people happy. That has been corrupted though. On another note our system was also set up to place the majority of the people represented by representatives against the people who own property and have a bigger stake in the future of the country represented by the senate. The senate was supposed to be elected by property owners only. It was the higher classes' representative. Higher class meaning someone who would actually do the work and get something for themselves. The guy who works just enough to buy booze and afford rent in the room above the tavern gets his say, but the guy who works his ass off to buy some land and a house gets double say. The founders actually set up a good system. The problem is after they died every politician has slowly been chiseling away at that system.

They are supposed to represent the wishes of the voting people in their district. Where this falls apart is that people are fucking stupid and just vote for any asshole whether they will do the job or not, because Americans have lost ownership of their government

The system is fundamentally broken and people are too fat and content with their 1700 calorie Oreo milkshakes and Netflix subscriptions to care.

Rhode Island and Providence Plantations only became a state by two settlement communities merging together. The founders and politicians of yesterday never anticipated that little states like Rhode Island would grow to have a population of a million people and think only having two people represent that million would be ok but that's reality.

Makes me wonder if their representatives went door to door and said hello, would the people know them? Could people confidently say "this individual represents me and my values in federal government?"

Why is best Korea called a Democratic People's Republic? Politicians use scummy marketing, it's nothing new.
