In response to why Beijing is not backing down to Donald Trump on tariffs, the answer is that it doesn't have to.

China's leaders would say that they are not inclined to cave in to a bully – something its government has repeatedly labelled the Trump administration as – but it also has a capacity to do this way beyond any other country on Earth.

Before the tariff war kicked in, China did have a massive volume of sales to the US but, to put it into context, this only amounted to 2% of its GDP.
That said, the Communist Party would clearly prefer not to be locked in a trade war with the US at a time when it has been struggling to fix its own considerable economic headaches, after years of a real estate crisis, overblown regional debt and persistent youth unemployment.

However, despite this, the government has told its people that it is in a strong position to resist the attacks from the US.
It also knows its own tariffs are clearly going to hurt US exporters as well.

Trump has been bragging to his supporters that it would be easy to force China into submission by simply hitting the country with tariffs, but this has proven to be misleading in the extreme.

Beijing is not going to surrender.

China's leader Xi Jinping told the visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Friday that his country and the European Union should "jointly resist the unilateral bullying practices" of the Trump administration.

Sanchez, in turn, said that China's trade tensions with the US should not impede its cooperation with Europe.

Their meeting took place in the Chinese capital in the hours before Beijing again increased its tariffs on goods from the US - though it has said it will not respond to further US tariff increases.

Next week Xi will visit Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia. These are all countries which have been hit hard by Trump's tariffs.

His ministers have been meeting counterparts from South Africa, Saudi Arabia and India, talking up greater trade co-operation.

In addition, China and the EU are reportedly in talks about potentially removing European tariffs on Chinese cars, to be replaced by a minimum price instead, to rein in a new round of dumping.

In short, wherever you look, you can see that China has options.

And analysts have said that these mutual tariff increases by the two superpowers are now becoming almost meaningless, as they've already passed the point of cutting out much of the trade between them.

So, the tit-for-tat tariff increases in both directions have become more like symbolism.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has, over the past two days, posted images of Chairman Mao on social media, including a clip during the Korean War when he told the US that "no matter how long this war lasts we will never yield".
Above this, she posted her own comments, saying: "We are Chinese. We are not afraid of provocations. We won't back down."
When the Chinese government wheels out Chairman Mao, you know they're getting serious.

Yeah sure, go get the people of South Africa and Vietnam to buy as much as Americans buy. Go knock yourself out.

Shanghai has a lower GDP per capita than Alabama.

The intelligent play for Europe is to placate Trump with promises to begin manufacturing in the United States, then drag your feet on that for four years while continuing to manufacture domestically (since stopping all production until American plants exist isn't feasible.) The dumb play is to pivot hard toward China, a country that historically only cooperates just long enough to steal your designs and begin undercutting you with Chinese production. When it comes to intelligent vs. dumb decisions, I know which European leadership tends to go for.

The article answers your hypothetical unfortunately.

Because the USA hasn't been trying to destroy euro manufacturing :story:

Potentially destroying your own auto industries to own the Americans is an interesting chess move, by interesting I mean fucking retarded.

And no, there is little rational thinking here, they're doubling down in a trade war with the biggest economy on earth while in a debt crisis. The biggest propaganda act the Chinese ever did was convincing the world they're good at economics.

This video is pretty informative. Basically, Xi is not in a good position possibly within china. So he's acting tough on the global state since the Chinese are very nationalist.

Edit: I highly recommend this video for anyone who has time or doesn’t mind playing it in the background while multitasking. She obviously doesn’t like Xi Jingping, but cares about Chinese people in general, so it’s not all just hoo rah. It’s a sober analysis

China Uncensored will probably come out with a video soon that says similar things, but under 15 minutes or so.

They're desperately trying not to lose the Mandate of Heaven which has always doomed Chinese dynasties. They're kind of fucked in that respect because they've already created problems they may not be able to overcome.

>US exports only amounted to 2% of its GDP

First off, rounding 2.8 down to 2 is an interesting choice. Second, this number is direct exports only. Indirect exports tack on another 20-25%.

The funniest outcome would be if the EU rushes to shoot itself in the dick over Orange Man and lifts trade barriers only for China to inevitably find a way to save some face while renegotiating with the US. For all their issues, the Chinese see Trump as a geopolitical opponent whereas the EU is afflicted with irrational TDS.

It's because Trump keeps being a pussy and backing down on the tariffs on everyone else. He should slap tariffs on every country that America trades with and just and leave them alone. The tariffs have to happen. They need to be in place. All those white people that vote or used to vote for democrats in the Midwest voted for this. They want Trump to stop the free trade scam. There is no such thing as free trade. No other country is going to allow another country to destroy their manufacturing sector and labor supply. The US is the only country that would do something so incredibly stupid. Of course, it wasn't about being stupid it was all done for greed and short-term profits. The greed that comes along with capitalism and especially unchecked capitalism. Capitalism and people can't be allowed to do whatever they want when it comes to economics either. There has to be some sort of control. The government is what exerts this control.

Trump is only going to be in office for a limited time. There is no 100% guarantee that someone else will come along and do what Trump is willing to do. Trump will be gone and so will the tariffs if someone with a protectionist mindset does not win the election. American consumerism is also declining by the day. We don't have a lot of time left to exploit that in trade negotiations.

It's not any different than when they refused to stop buying Russian natural gas to stick it to Trump, despite his ending being shown as correct.

You mean the Europeans? Yeah, they made a dumb fuck move. Thinking they could give Russia money and they wouldn't send hordes of 95 IQ Slavs steppe gooks and Central Asians their way in what's left of the old Soviet military.

Vietnam's already making a lot of stuff we used to get from China, such as shoes and laptops, off the top of the head. Suggest the Vietnamese can ramp up fairly quickly to make a lot of the little shit we use. Got the land, got the labor, not that expensive to build a basic factory. Other possibilities...Indonesia, India, Mexico, and here in the USA.
