Whoever told you that mislead you, what Jesus actually said was, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."- (John 14:6)I remember talking to someone about this. They said that those who were never taught of God via Christianity can still get into heaven so long as their heart is in the right place.
People aren't condemned to Hell for not knowing Jesus, they're condemned for their sin. Have they ever lied? stolen? coveted something of their neighbors? Than they are guilty of sin and no amount of ignorance will fully absolve that: "If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD’s commands, even though they do not know it, they are guilty and will be held responsible."- Leviticus 5:17
God is perfect, he should not have to spend eternity with imperfect beings, sinners. However because he loves us he decided to send down an escape clause, a way to be forgiven, a way to avoid Hell. That was himself (in the form of Jesus), he came down to pay for your sins so you can be united with him in Heaven. That's true love, even though he shouldn't spend eternity with someone like you are I he wills it.
There are a couple things to not about this, you're very right in that people who don't know Jesus are in Hell. And theres real suffering in Hell, there fire (Matthew 25:41) and weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:12). But there is some reassuring news. Jesus explained that while ignorance of Jesus will not completely absolve you from your sins but it can lessen your punishment, Jesus explained, "That servant who knows his master’s will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows. But the one who unknowingly does things worthy of punishment will be beaten with few blows"- Luke 12:47-48. So we can be assured that people who are totally ignorant of the Gospels probably aren't getting the worst end of it in Hell, and are probably receiving a fair punishment in Hell, what that looks like is hard to say, they may just be kept separate from the Hell fire's on their own plain of Hell to experience a pain free, but rather dull eternity, but that's just speculation on my part.It sucks that people will suffer for all eternity just because they happened to be born into circumstances that didn't grant them the opportunity to even hear of Christianity.
However you should still be concerned for them for they are separated from God for eternity, unable to experience his love, and that should motivate you. Concerned these people won't get to experience God's love? Go out and share Jesus with them. In fact you are practically commanded to, as Jesus said: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age". -Matthew 28:19-20.
