Why do Americans insist on tipping instead of paying decent wages?

Tipping used to work when America was a high trust society. It was understood that tips make up a waiters wage. Nowadays if you're a server and you get an Indian group don't expect anything. These same people would bitch if food prices increased to ensure waiters got paid fairly.

I don't mind tipping, but I think it's unfair for someone to be paid $3 an hour while their bosses keep the money and the public has to cover the difference.

I'd tip someone the same if they made regular min wage as I would if they were working for $3.

When I was in high school, I made $7 an hour, and made tips on top of that. I don't think it's fair that others make half of what I made 15 years ago.

As someone who's worked for tips before, anyone who says "just pay decent wages" is a retard who doesn't know anything. By law, your employer must pay you minimum wage. When I was working for tips, my job actually paid above minimum wage, like almost every other job out there. I also vastly preferred tips, especially cash, because that was money I took home and never claimed on my taxes so it was basically tax free. And since I wasn't a retard and gave good service, I typically made around $100-$200 a day. Much more than I would have made with minimum wage at the time
