What I want to know is why many gays and lesbians feel the need to maintain something of a gender dynamic in a relationship when they're both the same sex? Often at least one gay man in a couple will be more feminine and/or submissive. You also have so many lesbian couples where one is butch and the other acts typically feminine. What's the need for gay people to approximate straight relationships?

It's very difficult to shed all influences from the society you have grown up in. Most people do just model what they see other people do and apparently they extends to gender roles.
They don't know how else to 'do' relationships because being openly gay is still so relatively new. I think in a hundred years this won't be so obvious because the demographic will have had time to start figuring out their own patterns.
But I have a feeling you'll still see plenty of feminine gays and butch lesbians with their same-sex opposites because some people just want to be the cutest ones in the relationship.
