I love to cook. But in periods of depression, I have relented to the temptation at times.

Other than this, I don't get it. But I was in the kitchen for years too, so I have a different perspective from the average person.

It comes down to a numbers game. If you do blind test, you will find that an overwhelming number of people prefer value over value for money. They just don't care what they eat.

As to how fast food manages to remain profitable, it's a combination of unbeatable factors:

• They own the best places (like data plotted, not random guess), because they can afford it.
• They order massive volume through centrals they then sell to franchises. They therefore have a massive power over prices. If they don't buy, they can bankrupt people.
• They hire the low of the low, and given they have low standards, they never really worry about running out of replacement.
• Cheap price means clientele just accepts it.
• Product is not fresh, nor is expected to be, so the loss is minimal.

It's probably more profitable to run a fast food franchise than it is running a mildly successful restaurant.
