Why do people unironically defend Pol Pot?

Pol Pot seems frighteningly relevant nowadays. All this "great reset" shit makes me think of "year zero."

Huh? I almost never see people defend Pol Pot. Even people who defend Stalin and Mao don't like him.

What I do tend to see quite a lot, on the other hand, are people making excuses as to why the west is actually responsible for helping Pol Pot in various ways (Nixon bombing Cambodia and the CIA deposing Sihanouk, Reagan and Thatcher continuing to recognise the Khmer Rouge as Cambodia's representative at the UN, etc.) as well as heaping praise on Vietnam for deposing him. The fact that Pol Pot was ultimately still a communist is always conveniently ignored, of course.

State enforced anarcho primitivism. No cities, no glasses, no books. I think the Uncle Ted crowd can get on board with that.

Because it's a way for them to be edgy, it's the left-wing equivalent of right-wingers making Hitler/Nazi jokes. I seriously doubt most actual leftists support Pol Pot, considering the sheer batshit insanity of his rule.

How can you NOT defend Pol Pot? Take a look at the blue checks and professional journos on Twitter, that's the type of people Pol Pot tried to warn us about. The history has proven he was right and that the total extermination of the intellectual class is necessary.

Pol Pot was never a marxist, he was mostly inspired by esoteric traditionalist nationalism and the cambodian golden age. He was deposed by commies. Only commies are anti-Pol Pot, who was a true and honest trad nationalist and did literally nothing wrong

When I was a teacher and I was reading some online stuff about communists winning the cold war ideologically, I thought it was absurd. I put down my phone browsing and talked to my colleague instead. I asked about her past. She told me about how she had a great time in cambodia in her teens. I asked a couple of more questions, and apparently she was there around the time of the killing fields and working to spread the ideology to peasants.

Here she was educating the sons and daughters of the nation's elite. Suffice to say, I started to take online discussions a bit more seriously.

Yes this france educated communist, marxist leninist wasn't a marxist. Sure. Just because commies hate each other doesn't mean they aren't commies.

But right, nothing as traditionalist as abolishing money, private property and religion. Certainly not communist at all.
