Why do people use "they" pronouns to describe fictional characters even when their genders are obvious?

Basically, you have characters in fictional media that people are finding out for the first time. One phenomenon I've been noticing on Twitter and other places since at least 2018 is people use "they" to describe characters even when the characters in question are clearly masculine or feminine.

Have these people been programmed to "not assume their gender?" Or is it something else?

Word Of God only matters if it aligns with rabid fantard fanon.

It's usually obvious what the gender is unless it's an animal or some fantasy creature/alien ect... Sometimes you come across a very androgynous character. But most of the time humans are obvious. Fandom wikis are cancer. There's so much autistic fanon in many of them. Sometimes they are handy for facts. But they speculate way too much. I was looking at the fandom wiki for Voltron awhile back and you'd think you were reading serious literature. It's a kids' show about a giant robot. It's not that deep.

It's possible there talking about multiple people, if not it's because there ultra mega fags.
Unless there talking about someone like venom or kamen rider w who canonical are multiple people in a single body they should be immediately ignored and shunned from society.

If someone takes issue with normal pronouns I just refer to them as "this individual" because I read that that's what the US military does to conceptually dehumanize enemy combatants so that personnel have an easier time taking action against them without feeling guilty.
