Why do so few people wash their hands after using a public restroom?

As someone who maintains the restrooms at my workplace, the vast majority of people don't seem to know how to wash their hands properly. I have seen one dude who works overnight use a stall and then just walk right past the sink and use the sanitizer instead. He also has half pink hair.

You would think the whole COVID scare would have gotten more people to wash their hands properly, but I guess that's expecting too much from people.

The amount of times I've seen some dude just walk right out without washing his hands is staggering. Sometimes even after they've taken a shit.
Username checks out.

Relevant story: my first part-time job when I was sixteen was in a supermarket. Taking a piss one evening in the staff toilets, someone was making brown in the stall. As I was washing my hands, this older pajeet exited the stall, and proceeded to walk right out back onto the shop floor without even making the pretence of washing his hands.

Fucking disgusting.

I think its hard coded into humans to do this type of stuff, although society is training people not to act like animals and wash their hands. I would be lying if I said I washed my hands at home after taking a piss, but generally do so when in public or visiting a friend. Spreading and swapping benign germs is an important thing to help build a strong immune system, if there is one argument for sending your children to public school it is to expose them to germs other kids spread to make sure they do not have a stunted immune system. Imagine growing up for 20 years in a completely sterile environment and then joining the real world, you would probably need to be hospitalized if someone with a mild cold sneezed on you.

In short without the government, teachers and health experts telling people to wash their hands there probably wouldn't be many people who do wash them now its part of the culture to do so. Obviously during epidemics and outbreaks its wise to limit the spread of germs and hand washing should be a no brainer.

I wash my hands all the time. To me it’s gross not to and I always had to yell at my family members when they forget.

Not washing your hands before you use the bathroom is the weirder behavior.

The public sphere is a cesspool and we should all try to protect our genitals. Especially if you anticipate having to adjust your feminine hygiene situation.
