If I'm being charitable, it is because back in the ancient times, before civilization, humans would see themselves forced to commit terrible acts just to survive, and the modern man, despite having lived in society for so long, hasn't gotten rid of such instincts. If I'm being uncharitable it is because they were evil people from the get go, and they simply didn't have the opportunity to carry out their evil without punishment up until that point
