Why do the elites hate cigarettes?

Every other drug has been more and more normalized except for one. For some reason the elites hate smokes and I have no idea why. Of all the poisons that are legalized why are cigs seen as the one that needs a shit ton of restrictions and warning labels?

Tobacco companies have spent millions of dollars researching compounds that prevent cancer and many of the promising ones are included in the recognized list of cigarette additives (see table 1).
If anyone has a vested interest in curing/preventing cancer, it's tobacco companies.

Just something to keep in mind.

What could possibly prompt one to be (rightly) skeptical of like every corporate entity except the one that happens to predatorily take advantage of people's addictions? Is it just contrarianism?

Rule 0 when dealing with any corporate entity is "their intentions are whatever they think is profitable."
The tobacco industry is one of the very few that stands to gain anything from cancer prevention.

Also note that even the study I posted is concerned about these additives essentially likening it to mass human experimentation.
