I don't think it's that simple. Suppose there's your average trans twitter user named Alex who advocates for trans rights. Also suppose the year is 2040 and transsexuals are now seen as completely normal individuals, perhaps even interesting individuals thanks to the successful push for that change in society. Alex has, subconsciously or not, succeeded at elevating his status in society. He isn't seen as strange or weird by your average joe anymore, in fact, he's now seen as a cool trans person.

In this world, no one will accuse Alex of being a "status chaser". He simply (and genuinely) advocated for the normalization of transsexuals.

He did gain in status though, so you could accuse him of being a status chaser. It may or may not be true, only Alex himself knows. But my point is the possibility is always there. I do agree that not everyone is motivated primarily by "status chasing." Some people are, some people aren't. Again, in today's world, it's pretty easy to spot those who are--they change their Facebook profile pic to a Ukraine flag, brag about getting vaccinated, etc.

We're talking about different definitions of status. I think you're talking more about virtue signalling, while I'm talking about one's status in society, such as how we (currently) see a medical doctor being of higher status than a nurse.

But I agree with what you said of course, people who virtue signal to appear righteous are easy to spot.
