why does college cost so much in the US?

The short of it is subsidies. The government (state and federal) pours money into colleges to cheapen the cost. The colleges then raise the price of attendance, because they know the government will just pour more in. It endlessly cycles out of control. Because college acts like a gatekeeper to decent white collar work, and most people are too lazy to do a blue collar trade, people will pay anything to go.

They also charge way more in list price than they do in reality. My university charges me tuition, then waives it. The dumbfucks could just not charge me it in the first place.

The universities squander all of their income on amenities to pamper the stupid freshmen with (who don’t realize they’re being screwed), endless pointless construction, endless pointless bureaucracy, and overpaid guest speakers nobody goes to voluntarily.

I don't think anyone has mentioned sports. Stadiums are expensive to build and maintain. Travel costs for the teams. Special workout centers and private dorms. Coaches, physical therapists, and other support staff.

I know a dude who spent all.his GI bill and tens of thousands besides to get a fancy Ivy League degree. He spent a lot of time bragging about how he was going to be upper crust, and was above dirtying his hands with manual labor.

I make more money than him at work that doesn't even require a high school diploma. His seething is exsquisite.

I believe its been made this way for 2 reasons. One cause greed and another to create ideologues and revolutionaries among the young.

I wrote this in another thread:

You have schools advocating for BLM.

You have academics creating all sorts of batshit insane theories like this:

What is negative feminism and anti-social queer theory? My fragmentary answer: it is a queer critique that aims to decenter positivity, productivity, redemptive politics of affirmation, narratives of success, and politics that are founded on hope for an imagined future. It’s rude politics and has no interest in being polite. It embraces masochism, anti-production, self-destructiveness, abjection, forgetfulness, radical passivity, aggressive negation, unintelligibility, negativity, punk pugilism, and anti-social attitudes as a form of resistance to liberal feminist and gay politics of cohesion. It’s about not-becoming because the notion of becoming is perceived as following the capitalist logic of production and models of success that are often tied up with colonialism. It asks, why the fuck should queers be nice? And asserts that politeness is heteronormative and we should embrace our utter failure at functioning within a colonialist, heteronormative, capitalist, racist, sexist and transphobic framework. Jack “Judith” Halberstam is an academic who has probably articulated this theory most lately. I want to talk about his theories and raise some pressing questions and criticisms of his controversial ideas in the context of my limited conversations with him. This essay is largely based on Jack’s article, The Anti-Social Turn in Queer Studies (pdf).

You have a feminist who helped establish the very first women and gender studies program for colleges advocate for eugenics to be rid of men and to invade and destroy male spaces. The idea that these academics all praise communism and marxism and inculcate it to their students is childs play compared to the previous.

Next, you have all these kids saying that they are stuck with massive amounts of debts from colleges and with nothing to show for it. Those youtubers Clownfish Tv sometime ago made a video talking about how colleges were demanding that kids who were not even physically going to said buildings cause of Covid still needed to pay exorbitant College tuition and fees.

These colleges in that Oberton IIRC case talked about unleashing the student mob against a bakery for racism. How and why does what is supposed to be a school have such power over the students that they can make them a mob to terrorize people?

And for people who love communism so much, why are they so greedy and demand so much money from students?

Think about it.

What do you guys think?

It's simple. An individual, or family, is not expected to absorb the cost of tuition at this point. When you can mortgage your future, and not pay much in the present, it's so easy to tack zeros on. There will always be some entity like the government or private loans using a complex web of borrowing and lending to make money appear and fill the gap between what most people could realistically save up and pay for in cash. Most schools don't have to care about making college 'affordable', because whatever the price tag is, a subsidy or loan will fill in that gap.

Also, government subsidies and etc, may only pay the college a percentage of sticker price, so the sticker price for the people who try to pay out of pocket is inflated.

It's the same reason medical care is so inflated in price. They have to charge 30 bucks on paper for the tylenol and gauze they gave you after your surgery, because they've made some special deal with most of their insurance providers or Medicare/Medicaid to only charge a percentage of that.

Just join the military. If you're not a grunt or MP you'll probably end up with a highly valued skill and have tons of decent-paying prospects once you get out. Failing that, there's GI bills, but I've definitely seen people waste those.
