I have only just now, close to my 30s, fully comprehended the importance of respect. I understand that different cultures are built on different key principles, but respect seems to be sorely missing from western culture from every generation since WW2. I've been so busy thinking about all the ways I've been disadvantaged through my life, that I've lost all grasp of how fortunate I am to have the people in my life I have, and to have the capability to consider them and what they bring to my world. We should all understand that we are truly in this together in a spiritual/cosmic sense. We all deserve to be treated with proper respect and consideration, even the lolcows. I won't stop laughing at their misfortune, but I'll stop judging them as lesser than me. We all have as much meaningfulness behind us in the eyes of the void and of the eternal god consciousness. We shouldn't let this world's faults rob us of respect.

Hyperreality refers to a replica of something that never actually existed, or an image that is more real than the thing it’s supposed to represent. Social realities which represent our limited understanding of natural reality. The hyperreal suggests stories and images curated to be “ideal”, which elicit even more from a person than their supposed source material would in nature. Pseudo-events are staged occurrences built to create press coverage for public interest reasons. The hyperreal becomes as society progresses, by pseudo-evolutionary social engagement or disregard, much more engaging than the real can ever be. Pornography and professional sports are populated by superhumans. Curated lawns parody nature. The mundane is histrionic in reality tv programming. Retail stores employ “facing” to look perpetually full. Our world is full of deliberate, curated signals that signify half-truths and non-truths about the actual physical reality of supposedly readable situations. Social Media is the ultimate expression of the horrifying addiction and cultural deadening of the Hyperreality on every human civilization it has ever emerged in.

Like organisms, all High Cultures die. Their final centuries are as Museums, which fossilize and canonize their special arts/sciences/other forms with high intellect but no soul, or creative essence. Fossils which imitate natural culture but in cruel parody will survive High Cultures but they cannot carry the Culture’s nuance or aesthetic sense or sense of the sacred with them. Oswald Spengler argued, in his 1921 book, that the constraints of other High Cultures also apply to Western culture. Over the course of only a few hundred more years, money would expand to exhaust all possibilities and democracy would hollow out and fossilize the Western world, killing its essence as it spins out its final cultural forms. Only blood is stronger than money: Power politics will emerge more blatantly and finally the High Culture will collapse, leaving behind its artifacts for future cultures to appropriate (although not to deeply appreciate). This is the fate of all High Cultures who live out natural lifespans.

Either America becomes something new in governmental and cultural form which owes no structure to the current nation or it devolves into a more terrible despotism then seems possible because the cultural force of American liberty is already dead and we are playing in the ruins. Oswald Spengler referred to the denial of this as the cowardice of optimism. The logic is subtle. If one is an optimist, then the pressing problems of the era will be overcome, and there is need for substantial reform and change. Therefore one does not have to fight for social and political change. Therefore Spengler argued that psychologically it takes much more courage to be a pessimist for that obliges the moral person to fight for change and reform which often has negative consequences for the reformer. The optimist has a free ride so to speak. Climate Change or Globalism are examples. If we are optimistic that our society will develop new technology to ameliorate the consequences of Global Warming or that our people will find and elect a strong man to fix our broken society, then we do not have to fight for changes today. The optimist avoids this burden.

Respect isn't coming back unless the conditions, the hardships, that forged it are. So much more will be lost, I wouldn't worry too long on 'respect' Childish leadership leading to directly-witnessed horror is the step after normalization of hypocrisies. Which riots cause Coof? Which one's don't? We're losing the ability to apply universal standards and the result will be the imposing of fear and blood to shut people up.

The Decline of the West by Oswald Spengler is a pretty dark book, I'm told A Study of History by Arnold J. Toynbee is more optimistic about our chances. I hope we are unique to all world history, but the pattern of the times is bleak.

Do you believe that respect is alive and thriving in western culture, or do you mean something else by this? Would you care to elaborate? WW2 was the tipping point for modern cultures. Problems like lack of respect didn't spawn from it, but they've certainly been exaggerated since then and it is firmly at the root of our discontentment.

The prevailing moral axiom is "people can do whatever they want as long as they aren't hurting anyone else." It's simplistic idiocy with two major flaws.

First, "harm" and "anyone else" can be very subjective.

Second, and perhaps more importantly, it only recognizes harm on the individual level. Which is to say that people largely no longer recognize actions that harm social systems as evil.

The ideology that enforces that moral axiom is collectivist and authoritarian, in large part because it is working.

Yep. While I would say that there is deeper respect in the East, it's not really directed towards the fellow man, more towards your ancestors and the hand that feeds you. Deep spiritual respect orbits the core of Buddhism, but the tenets of Buddhism are about as washed up as the tenets of Christianity at this point. The Old Testament still going strong in modern society though. I wonder why. (only in Minecraft though. I would never think that thought publicly.)

Publicly on just the internet, or both publicly irl and internet? I've found that I can get away with saying controversial and offensive things much easier in face-to-face social situations than in the online substitutions of them. I guess the ability will decrease evermore though, as people grow more and more conditioned to accept the reality of what's on their screen over that of their own face
