Why is it so hard to find a good YouTube downloader?

They all either want you to settle for low quality video, download some proprietary program, jump through bizarre hoops, give them money, or just don't work.

When you do find a decent one that downloads high quality videos with the link and a single click it doesn't work on every video and often stops working at all within a few months.

YouTube itself gatekeeps downloading videos behind their premium paywall too, and I'm sure they play a role in disrupting these free services.

I remember back in the day when you could use the browser cache to save a video, but back then 360/480p was standard and 720p HD

I've had to resort to using PreserveTube to download some videos and their download speeds are ASS. Seriously over 15 minutes for a 60mb file is dial up tier.

This is a strange thing to be autistic about.

They already told you what's best (yt-dlp).

If there's one out there, as you suspect, it will be closed eventually. And if you have time at home, and yt-dlp is set up, that's better anyways, unless you're in another computer and forgot how to install/update/configure the program & don't want to bother.

Then it's Russian roulette with Google search; prepare for some ear-wax cleaners ads or avast, or that woman within 1 mile of you that wants a sexual relationship.

Because Google niggered them all up with HLS or some shit I don't understand but I know it's a lot more resource intensive.

Just get ShareX and screen record, problem solved forever.

P.S. can anyone recommend a screen recording program with better audio quality than ShareX

When I want something quick I use notube which is a website that has results that vary in success. Copy and paste the URL, it even tells you if the video has a copyright. What I learned about that site is a fair amount of music that I downloaded from YouTube doesn't have a copyright even though it comes from the official channels.

In the past, if I ever needed to download a single YouTube video on someone else's computer, I would just switch Invidious instances until I found one that allowed right-click downloading, but that ship has sailed.

Does that still work? Every time I tried it was always borked
I have never gotten yt-dlp to work through command prompt. I've tried to follow online instructions but never had any success. I guess I'm just a retard though, because I use a yt-dlp gui called Stacher, and it currently works great for me.

Also, GrayJay and NewPipe both still let me download videos, but I only use those on Android. GrayJay has a desktop program, but I've never tried it.
