Dylan Mulvaney is leaning into the concept of the trans do-over as she searches for the person to have her first kiss with after coming out as a trans woman. The TikTok star, who uses she and they pronouns, opened up about the frustrations and pressure of finding that perfect person in a new interview with People.
“I'm getting a little impatient because, especially when you're feeling yourself and even looking at that Grammys picture, I'm like, that's somebody who should not be single,” Mulvaney told the publication. “But then you're like, wait, why is no one in the DMs?”
They added that they hope to find a relationship, and that they feel as though they get “a do-over as far as some of those negative experiences that I have had romantically.”
“And I want to do it right this time,” Mulvaney said.
The star is about to hit her one-year anniversary of coming out as a trans woman, as she’s been documenting on her popular TikTok series, “Days of Girlhood.” She’ll be celebrating that moment with a livestreamed variety show, naturally called “Day 365,” which will be filmed at the iconic Rainbow Room in Manhattan. The event promises “singing, special guests, and a walk down memory lane.” Tickets are only $5 and proceeds benefit the Trevor Project.
Mulvaney told People that they couldn’t “wait for the day that I get to show people that a trans person can be in a healthy, happy relationship.”
“I really want somebody to make me laugh because so much of starting to succeed and have these great things come has been a little serious at times, having to put this businesswoman hat on,” they said. “But I think once I do meet that person that can add some levity, add some lightness back to my life and I know that I can make them laugh in the same way, that is going to be chef's kiss.”
Because of Mulvaney’s visibility, she’s repeatedly been a target of right-wing harassment. After she interviewed President Joe Biden, she was blasted on Twitter by Marjorie Taylor-Greene, Marsha Blackburn, and more. Transphobes have also called for boycotts of brands like Ulta Cosmetics, for featuring videos with Mulvaney. And yet, that hasn’t stopped the star from thriving and dealing with trolls in style. What could be more iconic and fitting for the Old Hollywood-esque TikToker than a celebration of her womanhood at the Rainbow Room? We’ll wait.
