Why reddit is a terrible place?

Every time I go onto reddit it's through typing a question into google, and almost every time I have to scroll past comment chains of the exact same, painfully unfunny 'joke' before giving up.

The next option for google is usually Quora, where I'll read dozen paragraph long posts from boomers that don't fully relate to the question asked.

I have tried to use reddit many times and it always goes similarly. I ended up saying too many unpopular opinions, get downvoted and shadowbanned. And i don't think my opinions are really even that bad, they are fairly normal opinions for like 95% of the world. To not get shadowbanned and be able to actually have a voice, i try to make more comments that redditors like so i get enough upvotes to counter the down votes I get. But then I'm just feeding into the echo chamber myself, and I don't even want to make stupid positive comments on unrelated subs, I want to talk about stuff like crime in my city, but I can't. This is all because of how reddit is set up and the upvotes system.

The whole ecosystem is just fucked. I don't think it's fixable or salvageable. It's just a shit site that needs to die.

You'd probably do well in the red scare podcast subreddit.

Besides what has already been stated, Reddit was founded just in time for millennial culture to take root in it.

• Condescension and disingenuous rhetoric
• Doggish enslavement to approved authorities (especially if they have a degree/are a teacher)
• Disconnected lefty politics I.E. still thinking they are dealing with 2004 fundies
• Nihilism and sloth (part of the reason redditors stick to reddit instead of trying other platforms)
• Le quirkiness

All of these are hallmarks of millennial culture, and millennial culture encourages the creation of awful people.

Unpopular opinion: I don’t actually hate Reddit.
Reddit has its use. It’s well indexed, isn’t subject to search engine censorship.
I don’t actively post but I found some useful content there when I needed to fix my car or find recommendations and tips on a wide range of topics.

Reddit has had its karma system since its inception how would that be what made reddit what it is?

It's like interest. Maybe skinner boxing only changes your behaviour of what you post by 10% per year.

Skinner boxing has a compounding effect over the years and after 10 you have changed more than 100%
