I got in an argument with someone about how he hates the “Manosphere”, but I don’t really give a shit about it or even know what it is. I forgot what we were talking about, but he left me with this question: why should I care about things that don’t affect me?

generally you shouldn't

however in some situations, you might think "this doesn't affect me so i don't care" about a thing, but the thing does affect society in general, and if it influences and changes society, that change then does end up affecting you. so while the thing itself didn't affect you, its consequences do.

this probably isn't the case for the manosphere though, those clowns don't have the reach or power to influence anything that matters.

The problem is that everything both does and doesn't affect you.
- You could say it doesn't affect you if someone stabs you because we're all going to die one day anyways, so hey, what's the difference?
- You could also say that someone living their life in a way you don't like on the opposite side of the planet affects you because they use up air and resources, setting a social precedent, blah etc.

It's all up to interpretation, there's no objectively provable difference. But mostly you should tend towards the side of worrying about yourself and your immediate environment, because obsessing over what other people do is a product of purposelessness and insecurity.

It's all effort vs probability. How likely it is that something that doesn't seem to affect you might actually affect you vs the amount of time you dedicate to caring about it.

If it's just 5 minutes to be aware of something then it's probably worthwhile. At least you won't get caught with your pants down and clueless. It all depends.

I think the manosphere is just incel stuff. I actually had some fun reading the incel wiki once, it had some interesting perspectives, especially if you're a fatalist.

He thinks I don’t care about anything in the world because he only brings up leftist talking points that I either don’t care about or am not comfortable debating him about. I feel like he’d think less of me if I ever did tell him what I really thought because I’m so much more conservative than him. How am I supposed to tell someone who still watches Marvel movies why I hate trannies?

Rate me TMI, whatever. I just needed to get that off my chest.

In this case i think the interlocutor was just looking for a captive audience to rant at, and you escaped even more tedium by not engaging with him

I affect everything. None of my actions go without causing a chain of consequences. The people of America fighting over gun rights? I did that. Chinas rise to power? All me. A wildebeest in the savannahs of Africa stumbles very slightly? I’m right there, with the string he stumbled over.
There is nothing beyond my purview. I have created this world and I may end it at anytime.
I even am the cause of my detractors, they wouldn’t be trying to poison me with anti psychotics if I didn’t create medicine, schizophrenia and man.
I am why you think that.
