Will humanity be able to survive the advancements in AI, or will we become like sheep, losing our agency and critical thinking as AI takes control of our lives? Are we at risk of allowing AI to shape our future in ways that ruin our agency

people started to use AI like npcs and some women i know are using it like a sexual partner, where do you think are we heading?

The decline of critical thinking becomes much worse with people unable to form their own thoughts or arguments. It's already bad now, but it will become much worse. I have coworkers who go "Let me ask chatgpt" for every single little thing. Even the most simple questions where one could simply think for a few more seconds, they will rush to chatgpt or whatever ai they are using. I see more delusional cases breaking out, or some idiots trying to marry their own chatbots (it probably already happened and I just don't know about it.) Is it fun to mess around with chatbots? Sure. I liked baking cookies with a few historical figures, but it gets old very fast. Those who are extremely lonely though will never find it old, and will find it to the closest to an emotional connection they will get.

Children having unlimited access to ai chatbots is already fucking them up. It's even fucking over adults when more and more are reporting being lonely. We already have people throwing money at streamers to get a crumb of interaction, spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars to visit fansigns where some idol will say a scripted line. Hell, some are even paying for skinship to hold someone's hand for three seconds.
 
I'm excited for AI. Shit is scary, sure. But so was all change that pushed us forward. My hope for AI is to replace the entertainment industry as a whole. Yes, downsides everywhere but here me out.
  • You get off work. You want to watch a movie with the wife for the night. You decide on a medieval fantasy movie set in the universe of TES.
  • You pull up <InsertCompany>AI and put in the prompt what you want to watch. It asks you specifics like type of movie genre, general design of characters, style of the movie itself (Michael Bay, 80's esthetic, etc.
  • You spend 20 minutes choosing options, it generates the movie in 20 minutes.
  • Movie is actually decent, 7/10 or better
You could do the same with video games. Generate a game on demand, all the above. I think AI will get here. Its not there yet, and it might not be for a while. But I believe it will get there and it will replace most jobs/roles in society. We either embrace it and make it the best it can be for society or we ban it. And we aren't gonna do either which is the real downside.

I see it similarly to modern American life: Fat, lazy and unwilling to do anything to advance our lives. About half the population falls into this. The other half will survive and thrive when it all collapses. Same with AI, I hope. Half or more will sell their souls and agency to it, others will either not use it or use it for actual benefit. We will see.
 
What if AI is that "Great Filter" that's been hypothesized to explain why there's no sign of technologically capable aliens out there?

I'm old enough that in my childhood, no internet or basic dialup was the norm. Being born so late that one cannot recall the time before "smartphones" and "social media" is unsettling enough, but can you imagine being born as a "Generation Alpha" or "Generation Beta" child who does not even know what before the AI fad of Current Year was like?

I'm interested in generating art and videos to make it seem like old historical films. It will be a long time until we reach that point.

Jpop/Kpop shit. Don't know how it works for jpop, but for kpop these days, you buy up hundreds of albums, merchandise during a period of time. Get entered in some sort of lottery, domestic fans get prioritized, and a limited of international fans get in. Some fansigns will allow skinships, where you can shake or hand their hand for a few extra seconds. International tours, from what I remember, you just pay extra. That's how I met the Wonder Girls when I was a kid. It was a long time ago so things more than likely changed.

Or you can pay for one of those cuddling services where you hire a professional cuddler.
 
I doubt AI companies will survive a couple more years of needing increasingly large amounts of investment. OpenAI, for instance still loses money on every single subscription it offers, including the $200 tier. Microsoft seems to be pulling out of building some data centres that were to be used for them, and SotfBank is already going into some very risky arrangements in order to bankroll them.
Unless they finally start producing something more useful than funny/annoying picture trends, sooner or later the VCs will come calling.

Middle management roaches will always find a way to justify their continued existence, it's the ground-level workers who will get fucked if anything. At least for a while, once middle management and up realises AI isn't actually a cure-all they'll need to hire people back to clean up the mess.
OT: The panic over AI is largely overblown imo. It's really annoying how hard it's currently being pushed, but uses for the average person are pretty limited unless you're the kind of braindead retard who claps at magic tricks as an adult. (I realise this describes most of Gen Z but they were already fucked for a variety of reasons.)

I think the turning point will be once corporations decide AI has reached the point of being stable enough to begin the enshittification process: once you're being charged 10 bucks a month to ask ChatGPT the Jewish Question I think the novelty will evaporate for most people.

A.I. is much less of a threat than the midwits who might feel empowered by it to do some absolutely retarded shit. Like trying to offload all thinking to machines without even understanding what they are asking to be done. That way lies the Butlerian Jihad.
 
I don't think AI itself will survive at least in its current form.
The technology takes so much energy and processing power I think it's practically unfeasible for it to keep up with the endless waves of "AI powered X" or retard requests being lumped onto it.

Which is giving a new meaning to the phrase killing something with kindness it means that a phrase as simple as "please" is apparently this costly and you have this solely because some guy needs his AI generated boilerplate code/goon material/shitty search results that are worse than anything from a decade ago.

You can claim it's going to be limited to "specific parties" but it's not like machine learning or computer aided design is a new concept.

People who are really in favor of AI replacing jobs and us living off UBI I think have a fundamental misunderstanding of how humans work. We need purpose and structure. A reason to keep going. There's a very small percentage of people who can just do nothing all day and be happy, but that's not most. The same type of people who celebrate this unrealistic socialist utopia are gonna be the same types who start freaking out and burning shit once they lose their stream of income. Think of what happened in the US at the beginning of the decade with the BLM riots. Now imagine that by 10 fold.
I also think UBI is an unrealistic and stupid idea. It's more likely that the top will just let you starve and die, or that new age feudalism will happen, than that they'll throw you a bone. The idiots who think we're all going to sing Kumbaya and live in peace because of automation aren't ready to hear that though. I can't think of a time in human history when humans as a species haven't tried to fuck each other over. "AI" and robotics are just another example of this.
 
Can an AI throw hands? Can it perform a spinning dragon kick? Those shitty walking rock'em sock'em robots don't even count. They can't even win a race. Till it's able to whoop some ass, humanity will still stand on top of the food chain.
 
I think we will. The current kind of AI that's out there is honestly not designed to be human-like, but AI that is designed to be more human and social is what I think we should be aiming for when it's not just meant to be some tool. Social AI would have empathy, sympathy and genuinely want to do well around others and to make them happy if designed right. I just see humanity as either the lesser group in that society if AI manages to outpace us in capabilities or that we'll have differing roles. Humans are self-repairing machines, for example. We can handle being in more dangerous and dirty environments than a delicate computer chip may find itself comfortable. We also require less energy to think(but further advancements in computing may change that) and can utilize completely different resources.

Humans and humanoid AI could live well with one another, in my opinion. I dislike the dread and doomspeak of AI destroying humanity. What damage it causes now is due to human directed actions. People not respecting the ownership of the art or intellectual property of others, people using AI as a crutch instead of doing anything to try and better themselves or learn on their own and so on.
