If I'm getting it right, the Best Friend thing was just a way to have gay marriage without affecting game's ratings, it was mechanically identical to marriage and even had goddess give you a child to look after. The rest of the world being pretty conservative this wouldn't pass their regulations, but Western Europe and over half of America are pretty supportive of gay marriage so I'm not surprised localisation in those regions just corrects it to what was intended. The new Friends of Mineral Town remake is getting gay marriage in the western version. Looks like Billy read as far as "marriage" and "same-sex" before writing an article about it.

XSeed Games decided to change the Japanese “Best Friends” system from Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town to a marriage system in order to accommodate the mentally ill people who derive the only sense of satisfaction in life through loudly proclaiming what their sexual orientation is on social media.
Gematsu picked up the news from an XSeed Games blog where they detailed the change in order to blatantly make it clear that the family game would include gay marriage when it launches July 10th in the West for the Nintendo Switch.
In the blog they explain…
Except gay couples are not identical to heterosexual couples.
Gays can’t procreate with one another.
It’s bizarre that in [current year] we have to point out basic scientific facts, but in a Clown World society somehow basic facts are becoming an endangered species.
It’s also funny how Western localizers don’t mind adding features when it comes to the gay agenda, but they’re always quick to remove features when it comes to fan-service for straight males. If you pose this conundrum to Centrists™, they won’t have an argument and will deflect with non-sequitors such as “You’re just as bad as SJWs” all while defending censorship and arguing for more gay content in kids material.
A bunch of brainwashed sodomites in the comment sections across Left-wing websites are praising the decision because they need mainstream media to validate their poor life decisions since they actually hate themselves, and so they need all forms of media and entertainment to reinforce that “being gay is okay” to compensate for said self-hate.
Normal people don’t need constant “representation” in every single media entertainment form out there, especially if they belong to a minority that only accounts for 1.6% of the population, as per a report by Time Magazine.
In essence – and as admitted to by GLAAD – gays are already overrepresented in media, yet they still want more.
They want your kids.
If they’re going to add lifestyle choices to a family-friendly game that is the leading cause of STDs in America, according to the CDC, then the game should absolutely receive a higher age rating. Children shouldn’t be falsely given information that it’s okay to be gay when said lifestyle comes with high amounts of drug abuse, high amounts of unprotected sex, and high amounts of risks to fatal diseases and suicide.
And remember, folks, that’s not an opinion… that’s a fact.
Personally, I wonder just what XSeed means by "the producer has been supportive of our decision from very early in development." I also suspect that the gameplay changes mentioned will negatively impact the game. Billy doesn't touch on either of these points, but I guess I shouldn't expect any curiosity or interest in games from a games journalist.
By being against localisation change, Billy is actually endorsing soft censorship pushed by Muslims and Chinese government.
