i've seen windows source threads drifting around on /g/ for the last few days but apparently someone just flat out dumped a full copy of xp sp1's source code last night. there's some server 2003/nt 5.2 junk in here too but apparently it's incomplete. i'm still trying to make sense of all of this, and as far as i can tell it was contained to 4chin for a little while until twitter got a hold of it and now """underground reporters""" from vice and the like are hovering around this shit like goddamn vultures.

obviously people have gotten their hands on confidential windows builds and code before, but i think this might be the first time a full version of windows nt 5.x has been made freely accessible? there was a partial win2k leak almost 15 years ago - emphasis on "partial"

allegedly wack0 (aka the broadon/nintendo leaker) was responsible for snagging this shit, but i've also seen a few randos claiming that this is a private leak that's been passed around for years, much like the xbox + nt 3.5 code that was shared publicly a few months ago.

is this fake and gay?? i dunno. will this be the fateful megaleak that leads to trillions of deadly security vulnerabilities being discovered and the "old" windows dying forevarz?? beats me. is this the leak that will finally give us a glorious, community maintained xp fork that Just Works™ and supports modern software and hardware without any of microsoft's cia backdoors? god i wish

is this actually just someone's dolphin porn stash? i don't know! download it yourself motherfucker

also apparently the 2000, xp and vista update clients are all completely useless now that microsoft has fully deprecated all sha-1 msdn files! golly i sure do love this company. fortunately it looks like people have archived most of it

I know the FSF was calling for Microsoft to open source Windows 7 a while back. Can we count this as that?

Also watch as Microsoft's legal team sends Null a complaint, only for him to tell Microsoft to fuck off.

Personally I thought XP was better than 7. Vista and 7 was where the restrictions bullshit started unless you knew how to unlock the admin account.

A bunch of autists made an XP SP 4 almost 5 years ago. If someone can use the source code to it's full potential and make an actual functioning Windows for current year, so many fucking people would flock to that shit.

GREAT!

Now all I have to do is to make some nonsense for my Windows XP Virtual Machine that exploit some of these vulnerabilities found in the source code.

I’d be first in line. XP was fucking solid.
Windows 10 can suck my dick.

yeah if this is legit doesn't this pave the way for some manner of a modern XP?
I wonder if that code includes all the billions of security patches over XP's lifetime or if it's the RTM source.
That's a real monkey's-paw wish - "All right, you have the source code to XP, but you need to write the patches yourself."

journos are hopping on this shit like flies already, and of course some of them are whipping out the incredibly predictable "durrr xp unsupported, upgrade to windows 10(tm) goy!" punchline

I cannot express just how badly I want this. Honestly, I doubt it would take much. There's a decent amount of autists still using XP as their daily driver, updates and patches be damned, and they've managed to "reclaim" an impressive amount of compatibility as is.
