We had to replace a whole central AC unit for a single family house over the summer and it cost $3k. Granted, the installation was done by a friend who only charged for the unit and parts (so no cost for labor, travel, etc.) but we also went with his recommendation as far as the unit itself went, and it wasn't the cheapest option available- I think they started at a bit over half of that cost. Sounds fishy to me as well.
