She likely didn't realize what a piece of shit he was until well into the marriage. They got married relatively quick and iirc were like childhood friends or something right? In white trash culture it's not entirely uncommon to just have a "fuck it, you'll do" marriage (or two or three) that are more a thing of convenience than love or anything. They're both fat and live in a trailer, it stands to reason it was one of those "eh, whatever..." unions without her realizing the extent of his babyboy childishness.
