I would love to be an Alchemist that sits in the town and sells your goods when you need to. You could probably find a better picture of Tiffy from Raw Time if you wanted to tho.
I tried playing the very first one (Mad Overlord) on a variety of platforms and I just couldn't get the hang of it. I can barely figure out how to get to the first dungeon after creating the party members and even when I do they all die quickly. I will need a walkthrough to beat them
I've been playing the remake, and while there are a lot of Quality of Life changes to make it more palatable to a modern audience, none of them seem to affect how difficult the combat is.
Take the dungeon slowly at first. Your starting crew is about as flimsy as tissue paper, so only once your gain a few levels do you actually want to explore the dungeon in-depth. Even then, you'll want to make frequent trips back to town to restore your spells and health.
As for healing your party, if you're playing the OG versions with the Inn pricing (or the remake with modern conveniences turned off), just send your healer to the Stables to restore their spell points, take one step into the dungeon, cast as many heals as you can, then go back and do it all over again.
Once you start accumulating cash, spend your money on armor upgrades, prioritizing your front-liners.
Also, make sure you have a back-up crew incase something terrible happens to your A-team. There's always a solid chance you'll get party-wiped, and having at least three characters in a B-team means they can carry a group of newbies to help them level up faster, and eventually reclaim whatever's left of your A-team, and eventually pray to the gods of Cant you get them back to life too.
I love this game so much. if you have room, put me in as a Faerie Ninja, female with Chaos A voice. now you can try for the Cane of Corpus! metagaming!
I haven't been able to figure this out on my own, but is there a way to get this game to run in a non-dogshit aspect ratio? I haven't been able to find any mods or patches that makes it fit my monitor.
I've attached a video below with each party members voice, if you're interested.
The story begins with the Dork Savant shooting down our spacecraft, causing us to crash-land on the planet Dominus. After opening a chest and getting some loot, we have our first fight with some rude crabs.
In base game the mage is pretty bad, but luckily we're playing with the "Christian Coder’s mod" which makes offensive magic viable. Thus, Scuttle cleans up the crustaceans with an AoE flame spell. This will be a running theme in the first dungeon.
Our two time stroke victim senses the presence of some enemies ahead.
Note: No idea why the audio shit itself. Hopefully I'll have it fixed next time.
For the sake of brevity I'll summarize the next hour of the dungeon: We beat up a ton of slimes/bats/insects, get mediocre loot, and level up.
Oh and we got harassed by a ghost(?) until CRUSHER remembered that he can dispel undead. Later, we meet our first friendly(?) NPC, Burz the uh... hamster?
He tells us to go to Arnika, a city to the south. After listening to his racist rant about rat people, we pawn off a bunch of useless loot and press on.
Scuttle does not trust the hamster.
Later, we ran into our first bossfight: Gregor and 5 smaller spiders.
Now's a good time to mention our general strategy: On the 1st turn, we have Jack Ass buff our team with Bless, buffing our armor class and hit rate. Gingledoof casts Itching Skin on the enemies, debuffing their defenses and attack power. Next, The Bear spreads Insanity for crowd control. Scuttle does high AoE damage with his fire spells, while CRUSHER has decent utility (can freeze an enemy in place) and dps. Finally, HENRY tanks and does high damage to anyone unfortunate enough to be in range.
HENRY, as our sole non-magic user and the only member capable of tanking anything, goes in the front. Everyone else goes behind him, though I put Jack Ass and The Bear on flank since they're a little tankier than our other casters.
This fight is moderately difficult. The small spiders' ranged attacks can paralyze a party member, and if that happens it's pretty much over. The Bear was really useful in this fight, Insanity caused one of the small ones to attack Gregor, paralyzing him! After we cleared the lesser spiders, we finished him off. We wander around some more and run into a techpriest Aletheides.
He tells us that to ascend to the cosmic circle, we need to "learn all that a cosmic lord knows", and then go to Ascension Peak. He then disappears before we can talk to him. Before we can leave, one of the Dark Savant's ballwashers ambushes us.
"NooOOoooOo stalker child, the Dark Savant is the one who will be Cosmic Lord!" He also mentions that the Savant will have a sperg meltdown and literally destroy the planet if we attempt ascension. He tells us to go to Arnika and see the tower built there which contains the apparent doomsday device, he then disappears before he can talk to him (what a surprise). Later, we finally find the front door and go outside for the first time.
Not much to say about this area, it's just a linear path with a bunch of roaming enemies to fight. After fighting probably 20 bandits in a row, we stumble into even more bandits.
Our casters had low mana, so we opted to run away. It's a legitimate strategy!
While trying to get some rest, we got ambushed by whatever the fuck these things are. After we vaporize them, we continue down the road a bit and finally make it to Arnika.
We'll stop here for now. Next time we'll explore Arnika, talk up the locals and hopefully get some better gear. Apologies if the updates come a little slow, life has gotten busy lately. Feel free to backseat and tell me if I've missed anything.
If you ever try importing custom portraits into this game, may God have mercy upon your soul because it is so fucking painfully unintuitive and tedious. Even if you do it perfectly it'll just *not* work half the time. You'll get a bug like this:
and the fix is to just repeat all of the steps until it somehow magically works.
Fantastic playthru so far. This is a much more fitting sequel for Henry, at least he's not going thru a humiliation ritual constantly AND he gets to behave like a proper knight!
This is re-awakening my inner build autism and makes me want to play a party based RPG again. The closest I got to what I am playing right now is Pokemon, but maybe in the near future I will dig around in my backlog for something interesting.
Gingledoof is on a righteous mission to reclaim his former title of "Wise".
In doing so, the helm of Tarde's curse will be lifted and he can rejoin the Brotherhood of the Grand Wizards.
Alright team, I finally got some free time. I forgot to mention in my first post, but we're playing on Expert difficulty for this run.
In the last episode, we made it to the first town: Arnika.
At the town's entrance, we meet a very trustworthy fellow by the name of Myles. I've fixed the audio issue from last time, which is good because the voice acting in this game is stellar.
He tells us that most of the locals have evacuated since the Melanin Savant arrived and terrorized the place with his troopers. Myles then informs us he's got a "rescue-for-profit" mission and asks for our help. Given that we're in desperate need of some gold, we say yes. He further details the job: Savant Troopers kidnapped a woman and took her over by the site of a crashed spaceship. We have our first quest! Oh, and he mentions that if we want to know more about the Savant and the Cosmic Circle, we should ask "Lord Braffit" at the monastery. Also, apparently he's a Higardi, which is the tribe of humans that live on Dominus.
Myles has joined the party! At least for now. He's a rogue so I put him in the frontline with HENRY. He has high speed and good skill with daggers, also good at disarming traps (this will matter later). We proceed to take a nice, peaceful walk through the tow- nevermind.
We have our first encounter with Savant Troopers, whom The Bear identifies as androids. Being mechanical in nature, Bear's psychic attacks have no effect here! The situation deteriorates further when suddenly, 7 fucking raiders join the fight. This is a good time to explain party formation and why it matters.
HENRY and Myles are in the front, The Bear and Jack Ass behind them, and our squishiest casters are in the very back. Here's the catch: Enemies can surround your party and get at your backline anyway. HENRY can eat hits for days, but our resident mage Scuttle, for example, can only tank a couple hits from a Trooper before he's cut into ribbons. How do we avoid this? With proper positioning.
We run into a corner, which forces them to target our tanky frontline, and limits how many of them can attack us at once. From there, the fight is pretty easy. Here's a short snippet of it.
After resting up, we walk around town some more until we stumble upon He'Li's Inn.
We meet the aforementioned He'Li, but she refuses to talk to us until we pay Myles's overdue tab, which amounts to 192 gold.
Considering it's not OUR debt, we refuse. We can just have Myles leave the party temporarily, and then talk to her again.
Oh.
Needless to say, we end up paying the toll. After picking up Myles, we talk to her for a while. TL;DR she mentions that the T'Rang (bug people) and Umpani (rhino people) are looking for hired guns, and that the bugs live on Marten's Bluff and the rhinos at Mt. Giga. We buy some ale, and then go upstairs. After disarming a trapped chest, we find He'Li's personal stash and keycard.
In the next room, we find... 5 raiders. There are no safe havens in this game.
After reducing them to meat paste, we loot another chest and head back out to town. We spot the crashed ship Myles mentioned earlier, but let's hold off on that for now.
We also get into an encounter with some raiders. This is just part and parcel of living on Dominus.
We see a building to the side and run up against a locked door. Lockpicking in this game is highly tedious, so instead we have Gingledoof use a spell to magically hold the tumblers in place.
Neat. We grab some loot inside and move on. Later, we come across Anna's Marina and Bait Shop.
Surprisingly enough, Anna actually has some useful information. She tells us that the Mook are in town, and that they're in possession of the Destinae Dominus! That's one of the 3 necessary artifacts we need to achieve godhood (and prevent the Savant from doing so himself). Despite being a bait & tackle shop, she mostly sells weapons and armor. We pick up a heavy duty sling for Gingledoof, and sell off a bunch of junk. Before we leave, we check the adjacent room and find Anna's personal stash, as well as her keycard.
We press on, explore the town a bit more, and meet Antone, the blacksmith. We ask him to share some rumors, but he's not much for conversation.
He sells some decent armor, so we get HENRY fully suited up. Unfortunately, he doesn't sell any 2-handed swords he can use. Luckily, in the other room we find his personal stash which contains a claymore! With this, our Fighter can do up to 50 damage a swing, which is more health than a Trooper even has. Oh, and we grab Antone's keycard.
Moving on, we find Arnika's local bank under attack by the Savant's goons.
With the help of the bank's guard, we smash the Troopers and begin a conversation with the clerk.
Remember the keycards we picked up earlier? We hand her one of them and she allows us to enter the safe deposit area. Bank robbery has never been this easy. We loot He'Li, Anna and Antone's boxes, acquiring a bunch of gold and some decent loot. We find a locked door and open it, meeting our 2nd boss fight of the game: the Guardian Golem.
This fight was a bit difficult. The Golem has high HP, can attack 3 times in a single turn, and he's completely immune to psychic attacks. Myles almost died, but with Jack Ass's heals, we were able to keep our frontline alive long enough to defeat it.
Note: The loud noise is coming from The Bear's 'Hypnotic Lure' (that bright light). It's supposed to distract enemies but the Golem was immune to it.
After resting a while, we head back out to town and find the town's... airport.
We open the door and meet more of the Savant's goons.
We turn them into scrap and press on. For the sake of brevity, I'll summarize: The building contains a flight recorder analyzer and some loot. We don't have a flight recording yet, so we go back outside and meet a talking spaceship. Yes, you read that correctly.
Callisto doesn't have much to say for now, other than that the Dark Savant is currently residing within a starship orbiting around the planet. Afterwards, we finally get around to visiting the monastery. Inside, we meet Lord Braffit.
Apparently, the Higardi priests regard themselves as the 'chosen people'. Honestly, most of what he tells us isn't anything new. The Melanated Savant is committing a shoah upon my people etc etc. Oh, and apparently they once had possession of the Destinae Dominus, but it was stolen from them. We buy a few scrolls of Resurrection and finally go to the crashed spaceship. We come across the damsel in distress under attack by a bunch of Troopers.
We smash the androids and save the woman- Vi Domina. We learn that she is the Dork Savant's ex-girlfriend, and that he sent his troops to abduct her.
She suggests that we leave immediately before the Savant shows up, and to take her with us. Sure, why not?
Vi is a Valkyrie and specializes in polearms, so we put her on the frontline. After exploring some more, we find out where the Mook are holed up.
The Bear leaves our party temporarily to stay with his people. Oh and talking to this guy yielded no useful information, he evades all of our questions like a politician!
Q: Tell me about the Dark Savant.
A: We have no comment at this time.
I'll stop here for now. Next time we'll check out the Savant's doomsday tower! I've spoilered a list detailing each party member's changes since we fought the 1st boss, if you're interested.
HENRY: He's tankier and does more damage now, that's all. Fighter moment
The Bear: He can now cast 'Hypnotic Lure', a bright light that causes enemies to waste turns looking at it, this even works on mechanical enemies!
Jack Ass: Acquired 'Guardian Angel', a decent buff that *blocks* some damage, and can now cast 'Soul Shield' which mitigates magical damage from the Divine and Mental realms.
CRUSHER: Picked up 'Freeze Flesh', a strong ability that can afflict the frozen status effect on a bunch of enemies at once.
Scuttle: Can cast 'Fireball' which is just a stronger version of the flame AoE spell he's been using, as well as 'Missile Shield' which blocks non-magical ranged attacks for the whole party!
Gingledoof: Finally, we have our resident alchemist who's quickly becoming one of the strongest members of the team. He can use 'Sandstorm', an AoE earth magic spell which does a lot of damage to mechanical enemies, he can buff the entire party's armor class with 'Armorplate', can also buff our resistance to Earth/Fire/Wind/Water spells with 'Element Shield'. Oh and he has several offensive spells where he just throws boulders at enemies with his mind. Did I mention even if he runs out of spell points, he's decent with a slingshot?
