This happens to me a lot, I'll hear a statement and it'll be either confusing or unintentionally funny to me because its using a word that, to me, has a completely different meaning.

For example, recently I saw a Freedomtoons video called "Trevor Noah and CRT Debunked." .... I had actually not heard of Critical Race Theory before, so I watched it expecting a video about CRT televisions.

I was once on the other side of this as well... back when I was autistic enough to write fanfiction, I had a fight scene where I wrote that one character "gobsmacked" another one, as I assumed a gobsmack was just a really hard smack on the face. The person I shared this story with broke down laughing and explained the real meaning to me.

There's recently been a trend on video game circles to use the term "SMS," which always makes me think they're talking about the Sega Master System (I actually don't know what SMS means in the modern context).

Anyway, what are your stories? Especially any times that something like this caused a hilarious misunderstanding.

sms used to mean "short message service" and it was the name for sending and receiving text messages on phones
but i havent heard the term used in years, everybody just refers to this as texts or texting now
no idea what else it could mean

I remember I always wondered what "idk" meant because everyone would reply "I don't know".

In my early internet days, I assumed that FTW stood for Fuck The World.

There are also tons of English words, like the word "thread", that I've been pronouncing wrong in my mind for so long, it's really difficult for me to ever go back.

Unironically, I thought "BIPOC" meant a bisexual nigger.
Lol this thread is a mine of information, I always thought the same as well, and never really bothered to Google it.

I thought the extremely uncommon "gfy" meant "good for you."

It doesn't.

This came up in a gaming topic so I'll repeat it here.... every time I see the term "AC" I think it means either "Armored Core" or "Air Conditioner." So when I see people mentioning a game called "AC: Black Flag" you can guess what synapse fires in my brain.

As a kid, I thought RSVP stood for "Répondez-vous s'il vous plaît" instead of just "Répondez s'il vous plaît." Imagine my mortification when the ladies at the cotillion learned of my folly.

Also as a kid, I thought my friends were snickering at the number 69 because it had something to do with the moon landing in 1969... I was fairly sheltered until I started high school.

To this day, I have trouble remembering that BPD stands for Borderline Personality Disorder, not BiPolar Depression.

Here's one I can blame mostly on the farms, when I was looking up some sort of hardware and the tech sheet mentioned "DSP."

Okay bumping because I couldn't think of a more appropriate thread.... what the hell does "MVP" mean?

I keep hearing it in terms of "that guy is such an MVP" or "this competition has gathered the world's best MVPs" and like... I just keep thinking it means Major Vice Presidents or something but that wouldn't make sense in context.
