‘Work smarter not harder’: Server says he used to anonymously reserve large tables during his shift so it wouldn’t be busy while he was working

'They were always so irritated when the table didnt show up lol.'

A former waiter is sharing his trick for ensuring that his shift wouldn’t be too busy—and all he needed was a few minutes and a phone.

In his video which has drawn over 4 million views as of Saturday, @iamjcowell writes that he would call and reserve large tables to save himself the hassle of having to serve anyone at them.

“When I worked as a part-time waiter I would call the restaurant with no caller I.D. and book large group tables so that it wouldn’t be busy when I was working because I hated the job so much,” a text overlay on the screen reads.

The Daily Dot has reached out to @iamjcowell via Instagram direct message regarding the video.

Some viewers wrote that they did similar things at their restaurant jobs to either reduce their workload or get free food.

“When I was a host and my manager simply made me mad I called the restaurant and set up a party of 26,” one commenter wrote.

“I was a host & would call and place big orders on food I wanted to try,” another viewer wrote. “no show orders were given to workers to eat for free.”

“I used to lie and say our late tables were booked so I could leave early,” a user said.

Viewers outside of the restaurant industry also shared their creative workarounds for getting out of having to do real work.

“I called my own cell phone on repeat when I did telemarketing for three months,” one user claimed. “no regrets lol.”

“When I worked retail I used to tell customers that we were closing due to unprecedented reasons,” another viewer shared.

“Me scheduling appointments at my job so no one comes up when I’m at a certain station,” a commenter wrote.

Niggers are mad in this thread because some cheeky kid made them wait 30 minutes longer for a table one time. Did you forget what being a teenager was like or were you all just boring? If the IT guy at my job was submitting fake tickets to avoid helping me I'd be pissed, but stop pretending you care about a 20 year old slacking off at Chili's.

No wonder they went bust.
To be honest, if this restaurant was just taking reservations willy-nilly they fucking deserve to go tits up.

You should be taking a phone number and if it's a huge ass reso, you're calling to confirm. If it's a same day reso, you generally hammer that shit out or tell people to show up (if you're a respectably busy place.)

Apps like Open Table can also block numbers if they repeatedly no-show.

I'm leaning on this dude's story being made up bullshit.

I never got it, how hard is it to be a waiter?

It's a job that is a culmination of hard and soft skills.

Bear in mind I'm not trying to romanticize the job, but I do have respect for folks who do work in these industries (and are good at their jobs and aren't either dumbfucks who are doing it because they have no other prospects or are lazy shits who feel entitled to 'big tips.')

You're on your feet, constantly moving around while also dealing with the public, (including drunk people, people who think it's okay to grope or proposition you, where you typically don't see that in similar jobs) with no real 'break' from them. Odd hours (working late, saying goodbye to weekends, etc.) Having a good memory, ability to do quick mental math, cash handling (less an issue as we become increasingly electronic.) It's a mix of requirements for the job that your average McDonald's cashier or Wal-Mart shelf stocker might not have all in abundance, hence it being 'hard.'

If you're a functional human being in some semblance of shape and have at least 2 brain cells to rub together, it can be a hectic job, maybe even a 'demanding' job, but I've never really thought of it as a 'hard' job.

E: I'm a dumbfuck who hit reply instead of edit.

Actually my parents drilled a good work ethic in me at a young age. I didn’t get an allowance like a lot of spoiled shits, I earned money by doing extra chores. If I half-assed it, I had my pay docked. So when I first started working as a teen, I took pride in doing my job properly and not fucking around causing more work and stress for my coworkers. Sorry your parents seemed to have failed you in that regard. Almost sounds like nigger behavior to me

What an amateur.
You don't make it harder for the business to operate by avoiding work and income, you escalate sabotage in a way that it becomes an obstacle  for profits to be generated adequately thus forcing an audit into long ignored issues; remove problem and make operations smoother for everyone, doesn't matter if those problems are people or things.

happy employees, happy customers, happy environment, happy numbers. Sometimes it takes pulling teeth out excruciatingly slow to make happen though.

Because it started as well-meaning advice about treating minimum-wage workers with a modicum of integrity and not chimping out at a teenager hostess over a 15-minute wait for a table. But of course, antiwork dead-ends acted as the loudest voices on social media and co-opted it to try to convince society that life as a barista or cashier were among the hardest and most stressful jobs in America, and you're a piece of shit unless you lick their nonslip boots.

And it worked. There's an alarming number of people I've met who are under 35 and are afraid to send cold/wrong orders back, won't scan coupons, won't correct a customer service rep and become apologetic when they request anything, so entitlement along younger service workers like this asshat can flourish.

Why didn't he just fucking quit? I'm sure there was some single mom or guy trying to afford his benzo addiction that would have killed for those missed tips. But I guess commies queefing in solidarity didn't bother to think of that.

I just decided not to go to restaurants. Relaxing night out? No, this is definitely not that.

And people want servers to have a minimum wage of 15 dollars while employees pull this shit. I've noticed a steep decline in work ethic among coworkers over the last decade or so that it is mind boggling.
Perhaps they don't care because they're paid dirt wages rather than the other way around.

That's not personal whining either, without doxxing myself I probably had it a bit but not overwhelmingly better at my teen jobs. It sucks for those guys.

Something else to keep in mind? HR Departments talk to each other, even across industries and career fields, and they note almost everything you do. So believe me, you might not think you're being watched, but you most certainly are. Especially when, like this retarded Zoomer, you post your bad work behavior on social media for everyone (including your boss and HR) to see. You apply for a job? You'd better believe they'll look up your social media.
Thats assuming his social media accounts are his real name rather than an alias like 99% of non normie sites.

Edit: apparently his is a shorted version of his name. Make of that what you will.

If this was in the US, I'd be surprised. Especially in states with high minimum wages for servers, you would want all the tips you can get on top of that. Most shifts are only 3-5 hours. I have no idea why anyone would ever do this ever as a server. It literally makes no sense.
I'd love to know where you're getting the bolded from, I waited for many years in high school and college and I never encountered a three-hour shift for any position except *maybe* barback, since that's usually a role reserved for especially busy periods. Most shifts were 7-9 hours, and that included pre-shift opening and closing procedures, where you weren't getting tips. Back of house shifts were usually 8-10 hours.

Anyway, we occasionally had lazy-ass servers who fucked over their coworkers with stunts described in the OP, and they rarely lasted more than a week or two. No one liked them, they were punks.

He can't even hang out, all the places I've waited at had policies where if you had time to lean you had time to clean, phones would have the manager up your ass in a minute.
you could just clean half assedly.
but it's not really working smarter.
he does less work and makes less money, the restaurant loses business and he may eventually lose his jon.
