Worst songs from the best OSTs?

I'm going to have to pull out the Lunar soundtracks later, along with FFIX's and a few others.

I disagree but can see how Dazil doesn't fit with the rest, for me its Thames, I just don't like it.

Have you heard the Creid version of Dazil though? Banger.
Mitsuda pretty much went back and fixed all the issues with the Xenogears OST (what little there were) with the subsequent albums Myth and Creid, then the later 20th anniversary concert. Saying something is the worst on the Xenogears soundtrack means its still an excellent song. I think its some of his best work personally, and you can even hear a lot of Xenogears (specifically the 20th concert) in the Xenoblade 3 OST.

Yeah, I was kind of tired when I posted that. I might have to think about it a little more.

I took the topic to be about the least liked of the very best, not about a "bad" song on a great soundtrack. I still at least liked and enjoyed them all regardless.

That one used to kinda sound bad to me but it's grown on me over the years, and I actually like it now. I think it's just "off" enough to fit here though.

And I haven't finished Xenogears, but if that's the worst song the OST has then the music must be incredible lol.

You really should try and finish it. It really is a great top level game.

It is.. The soundtrack is unbelievable.

Agreed, It's the textbook definition of a flawed masterpiece.

if you can stomach the whole prison arc and the platforming doesn't make you want to eat a gun it's a great run.

but you are right that it would have been perfect as an only in Babel Tower theme.
I think it being used for Merkaba is also fitting since its also Deus, it never got grading to me but its used a LOT on the second disc. I also just need to post the Creid version because its incredible

As for thread tax, all the new Minecraft songs, the ones not done by C418, being done by that tranny Lena Raine, or the FFXI composer. The Lena Raine ones are the worst, the Japanese guy at least tried to match C418's style, but the Lena Raine ones sound like generic pixel indieslop music (he composed Celeste)

They only hired this tranny because Microsoft refuses to license C418's music and instead wants to own it outright, so he won't accept their deal despite having an entire 3rd album completed. So Microsoft hired a tranny that has no artistic integrity. C418's final Minecraft contribution was 3 tracks for the Update Aquatic, and they actually sound like Minecraft:
I don't play nu-minecraft, but apparently people are saying that the C418 stuff has been playing less and less with each update, so I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft eventually removes it all entirely.

The loading screen music for Sims 2 base game/complete collection is annoying:

Luckily when I was a kid my cousin had all the expansion packs so we got to spend 15 minutes straight listening to the vastly superior loading screen music from Makin’ Magic instead:

Easy answer.
Not that this is a bad song, it’s just by far the least good one in an OST that’s nearly full of masterpieces. I know every other song in Melee by heart but I can barely remember this one past the first minute or so.
That's the exact kind of example I had in mind with this thread. It's a funny song, tons of nostalgia behind it, and it accompanies one of my favorite stages, but it's the weakest link by a mile in such a fantastic OST. I love the monkey screeches in that song lmao

On a completely separate topic and that is only actually related if you squint hard enough. Any songs you lads love but then get "revisited" and something is lost or even ruined?
Pokemon comes to mind. They're actually usually really good about the music in remakes, but a few songs just don't sound as good as the originals. The most prominent example is gen 2's Champion's Theme:

Something about it just feels more flat and generic, it hits less hard, especially in the beginning. The epic buildup is butchered.

I feel like the music in the first two generations is underrated, in the sense that it's overlooked as one of the defining factors of why people look back at those games so fondly. The melodies themselves are excellent, but they have a distinct echo-y sound that I haven't heard in any other Game Boy game. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but that echo effect makes serious/action-packed moments sound more intense while making the towns feel like a warm blanket.
As for that champion theme, the remake is... good, but it doesn't evoke that feeling of "everything has been building up to this" like the original.

I'm a bit of an OST snob, especially with RPGs and Square's older stuff (anything under the DigiCube label, catalog # starts with SSCX). And if you were to ask me what videogame OST is solid gold, cover to cover; no bad tracks / even the weakest is stronger than most others, Xenogears fits that bill. Yasunori Mitsuda was touched by the Hand of God when he was given this assignment.

With that being said, and staying on topic; weakest Xenogears song for me would be the Solaris theme.
Fuck spoilers, the game is 25 years old; Statute of Limitations have passed. It's a relatively safe and secure city, but it's also the capital city of Ramsus and Gebler who've been hounding you at every turn. You'd expect something a little more wary or insecure since most of your party has been classed as third-class citizens, and now you're running around a first-class citizen area. And this is after you blew up their cities defenses to include the cloaking device that hides them from the rest of the world... and they know you're coming. But no, the city is lively and there's nothing to worry about, despite you being at the top of Gebler's Most Wanted list. But that being said, it's appropriate for safe town music.

As for my top rated song from the game

Jesus FUCK, I completely blanked this from my mind!? The fucking ChuChu theme was used in Solaris?!

... I retract my vote for Flight and shift it to this one.

Another horrible victim of needing at least 20 more tracks to properly do the game justice, such a pity.

EDIT: Also, since we seem to have ended up splurging about Xenogears so much, remembered this other fantastic piece, right next to Shevat's theme for me

Vile's theme from Mega Man X. It's probably the simplest track on the OST and it's kind of grating on the ears. Pretty much the whole rest of the OST has solid tunes with catchy melodies.

Also, Monsoon's theme from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. I don't even really dislike the song, I just don't like it as much as the others.

EDIT: Another one, why not. Work Day from Rise of the Triad. Pretty mid song in a soundtrack of bangers.

Arrangement and composition wise, Greenhorn Forest isn't a "bad song" but holy shit this might just be the single worst mixed song I've ever heard come out of a Triple AAA company. And I don't think it's the compression fitting into the game disk that causes it, since other game soundtracks from the gamecube sound good and fine enough. Whoever did the mixing job for this and other tracks in Wario World sucked major dick.

Not when Castlevania Legends exists. It may not be the worst thing ever but it has some real stinkers compared to The Adventure and Belmont's Revenge. And the stages are too long and the songs too short.
Hard disagree. I wish someone would do a metal cover of that whole OST, so many tracks are just begging to be played on a real electric guitar. If you listen "past" the sound quality and imagine it that way, it works really well.

I'm guessing Mojang wanted the game to feel more indie by getting le quirky indie composer, completely forgetting the game has been exremely corpo for years. Nothing will ever beat C418's music though, when you ask someone to think of Minecraft music I think 90% of the time the first song that'll come to mind is Sweden.
If they remove these tracks from the game Minecraft is fucking dead.

I'm still mad there was no C418 music in Smash. I get that the original songs wouldn't fit, but not even one remix?

C418 owns all the rights to the Minecraft OST, he just licensed it to the game. That's why Microsoft refuses to hire him again, because he wants to still own his music, and the revenue loss from him selling the soundtrack himself is just too much for the 2.4 trillion dollar company

Final Fantasy music is in a similar situation and Nintendo was able to to use it, so it's disappointing they couldn't get an agreement with C418 for the songs. Though with how Microsoft must be treating him over not wanting to give up his music, I can't blame him.
