Would it be possible die from the placebo effect?

I thought I remembered reading an article about a guy who tried to kill himself by overdosing on prescribed experimental pills and then changed his mind and went to the ER where he started hyperventilating and lost consciousness even though the drugs he took were a placebo.

I don't think anyone can explode themselves from sheer force of will. (Sheer force of will and an explosive device they built, sure.)

But otherwise believing you took something that's going to kill you, and then dying, does seem possible. People die from culture-bound syndromes all the time, like those Hmong refugees in the 1980s who had visions of angry ghosts and then died in their sleep of cardiac arrhythmia.

Strictly speaking it's the Nocebo effect at that stage and not the placebo if the expectation is negative health impacts and the expectation alone causes negative impacts.

In theory the fact it's got it's own separate documented name should imply cases that at minimum look like this have happened.
