Would it be prefferable to have AI function as law enforcement?

Eventually AI will have lower error rates than humans.

Will we prefer to be governed both in law making as in law enforcement by intelligences that are superior to our own? Even if they lack human experiences? Or will the lack of human touch make it unachievable?

The first rule of cops is to not talk to cops

Now imagine if the cops don't even need you to say a word cause they use facial recognition while driving by you in traffic and figure out your entire internet browsing history, realize you torrented some movie the night before and when you get home you've already been fined and they're waiting for you with a fucking warrant because the AI also figured out that if you stole one movie you probably stole others and they want to search your computer for it.

So no, don't fucking start using literal AI as cops.

I think it depends. With robots they can actually do things life shoot limbs to incapacitate and take physical damage trying to apprehend criminals so they could be a lot more useful for casualty prevention.
If you want robots to act just like the current police though I'd be totally against it. There's just too many 'human' factors about committing crimes that I don't think a robot could handle morally. Also it feels incredibly dystopiac.

Honestly I'd rather have the tech go more towards brain-scans and chemical monitoring to be able to better check if someone is guilty or not. I believe that wrongful charges are way more important to be dealt with than a couple of nogs getting shot.

I think there's too many variables at work here. If we're talking an automated policing system, no, I'd hate that. But if you can get the human element in there with true, thinking, feeling AI (if such a thing were ever possible) and also have the smaller margin of error that comes with machine intelligence, I think it would be better to let machines handle law enforcement. If a robot can do it's job better than a man while fearing the consequences and feeling the guilt of a mistake, what's the problem with that?

What about the fact that a properly perfected AI would have sufficient processing power to go Minority Report on us. If we're talking literal AI this is what is bound to happen if you choose to have it be your cop. They'll be inherently better at thinking than we'll ever be because they're not limited to a tiny brain that can't handle more than a few things at once.
These aren't gonna be robot cops, they'll be one single big machine controlling the entire system from a distance through a robot proxy. Sure they'll be great shots and probably won't fuck up nearly as much as human cops when it comes to arresting people.
But how long until they just decide to anticipate crime. Also one of the main limitant of cops right now is that they can't do everything at once, look at the UK, they're so preoccupied with hate speech they can't even deal with the other more important shit cause there's just not enough of them.
But what if the cop can do literally all of it at once. All of a sudden minor unimportant shit you could do before would now get you fined before you even realize you did something wrong.

Speeding because you're late to a meeting? No cops around? Fined anyway, entire road is covered in camera. Illegal download? Fined. Accidentally walked out of a store without paying for one item cause you forgot? The fine is waiting in your mailbox by the time you get back home.

I'd say it would depend, if the AI is not self aware or godlike it would be exploited by those in power, abused by them in order to persecute dissent, it could lead to a police state, but if it was a benevolent God tier AI that ruled over humans without their control then maybe it wouldn't be too bad.

All of this. If we're going to model AI to act like current police we'd pretty much be creating an army of RoboCop clones.

It could probably be more useful for a certain subset of crimes but to have it apply to all crimes is just unrealistic at this point in time.

EDIT: By "subset of crimes" I mean stuff that can be measured biologically like driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs. You can't really argue with science.

Robot policemen are dystopian, but giving cops the ability to x-ray your brain and see what you're guilty of - that isn't dystopian in the least.

This, imagine if every law was actually enforced on everyone all the time. Everyone commits at least a few misdemeanors a day without knowing a thing.

What are the pillars of AI Cop

If its "Eliminate all crime" using force and the authority of the state is the least effective way
 
I'd only put AI in charge of law enforcement if I'd just decided to wipe out people, start with a clean slate and uplift the cockroaches or something.

This shit sounds like the beginnings of a dystopian cyberpunk anime plot...cough psycho-pass cough. Any whore I understand the desire to stop crime in a more efficient way, but if it means getting brain scans or being followed by a robot that essentially could turn into the shit from terminator. Yeah i'm gonna have to hard pass on that shit. Relinquishing my freedom for a perceived modicum of safety is bs. Something something those who give up their liberty for safety deserve neither.
