Smartphones are a tool like a netbook or desktop computer. What makes them bad is the kinds of software that have been created to cater to the smartphone user first. Social media before the first iphone had a kind of sketchy aura from the likes of Myspace and Tumblr. Smartphones normalized that and enabled other things like snapchat, the slew of very suspect messaging apps like kik and line, and of course the swipe through dating apps.

I struggle with internet addiction, so I really don't like how mandatory smartphones are these days.

I feel for you. I think the greatest help for combating addiction of any kind is to really understand why it has rooted in your psyche ( and I don't mean gleaming an understanding through the basic neurochemistry). You have to look at how the addiction is making you feel, and from there you can find what deficit in your personhood your feeding with the addiction . Stay Holy!!!✞
