Lets say somebody makes alternatives for most free apps but its 100% open source and you own all your data, no datamining, no tracking, no ads, nothing

But heres the thing: you have to pay, monthly, because that somebody is not making money off your data like the zuck does when he's not busy fapping to your kids' pics

Seriously, you can have a free service or a private one, but not both, even DDG is now tracking your ass

I would pay if it was a reasonable amount like what streaming services charge, I dont think anyone would pay adobe-tier prices for this, but maybe normalfags wont even pay netflix-money to keep their entire fucking lives from ending in a private never-ever-gets-deleted datacenter that gives direct access to glowniggers 24/7

Or maybe they will, even the normiest normalfags seem to be concerned about this shit now

I don't have anything to worry about because 1) I'm not doing anything illegal, 2) I'm not being targeted by anyone who could make use of any information on me, and 3) I haven't done anything that could put me in any serious trouble if exposed to the general public. I think most people are in a similar position. So I wouldn't pay a monthly fee, especially considering that there is still no guarantee that my data wouldn't be sold off or given to the government anyway. I personally think it's best to assume that everything you want to hide is eventually going to be public knowledge and there's nothing you can do about it. You should just work your hardest to make sure that when it's all revealed you won't be at risk legally or financially. I know that sucks and it's far from optimal, but that's just the world we live in. We won't have the privacy we want until the status quo is entirely done away with.

I don't give a fuck and I'm not paying anyone shit. If anyone wants to waste their time doxxing or stalking me, they're going to be really disappointed. Go stalk a celebrity or something.

Even if I had to pay, the service would still sell my data behind my back and I'd be powerless to stop it

If I could pay anonymously, sure

Absolutely not.

Privacy is my fundamental right as a human being, not a privilege or a stretch goal.

Imagine paying to use social media. Just take the basic measures to block ads and trackers and mind what you post.

I'd like to share with you the following quote:

"Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say." ~ Edward Snowden.

what you dont have the 2 year plan starting at 3.29 a month with today's sponsor nordvpn?

Encryption is useless when microwave imaging of your throat and face can unveil even your inner speech. If you don't live in a SCIF, you are under full surveillance and the data isn't used for national defense but to select which advertising to show you and also to let cyber terrorists try to kill you.

The future of privacy/security is clothing made of metallized fabric to block microwave imaging (enables theft of inner speech by observing minuscule throat/face muscle movements) and block directed energy attacks. Rebel.

If it's made open source, they won't be able to charge for it. People will just use their own.

If anything gets big or centralised enough, the glowies will come after who runs it. They will threaten them and their family.

I think maybe some kind of blockchain based thing might work. Bitcoin seems to have got the bank folk worried. Just make sure to have the chain encrypted. Also, your blockchain is only as big as your contacts info, so you both don't have to download a lot, but also if it gets cracked they don't have everyone's data.

I don't think it's ever possible to have complete privacy or be entirely anonymous on the internet so this is mostly a fantasy concept. VPNs can be made to give over your info, software/hardware can be compromised.

If you're paying for privacy, you're already doing it wrong.
even DDG is now tracking your ass
It almost certainly always was. The dude who owns that company since its inception is a walking red flag. You've gotta be more proactive on checking up on this sort of thing if you ever want to have even a shred of privacy online. Just because someone else tells you a site or service is privacy-friendly doesn't mean shit. Follow the names. Follow the money.

Quick and dirty example: The dude had created another website long ago that gathered personal information in order to "connect you with old classmates". It put personal information into a big ass database and left your full name out there freely available for anyone who registers to search it up. It also "heavily encouraged" you to "refer your friends" by giving their information over to the website. Now, granted, you'd have to be a bit daft to do such a thing in the first place, but to get to the point: Does that "service" look like something a privacy-minded individual would create?

No, cause not paying for the same service is too convenient.
Also, as @Skitarii said, they could still be selling my data behind my back.

If I was absolutely certain that it was comprehensive, and that I couldn't ever get tracked? Sure. Millions of people pay for VPNs, who's ad campaigns promise the exact same thing.

I mean, freedom of speech is a "right", but this forum's existence should show just how limited a right can be in practice. So it's alright, in a realistic sense, to sacrifice in order to gain privacy. For most practical purposes, you'd be buying peace of mind, and that's still worth it.

Ignoring any illegal and profitable actions, which would obviously pay a premium.

I was thinking the same since theres a ton of projects like nextcloud that allow you that but you still have to set it up yourself with your own server which from the get go makes it impossible for normalfags to use, and of those who can handle that shit it still means time taken from job/life to do it

When you think about it there's no fucking reason to use netflix at all, plex has been out for years and storage its dirt cheap, you can roll your own netflix with an old PC and a 12TB drive. And yet netflix, before they fucked it with woke shit, was raking in the cash, why? because most people can't be arsed to set up a plex server, even if that its much easier than nextcloud

Its like apple and "it just werks", sounds stupid but thats what normalfags want

Years ago maybe when it was all speculative but both dapps and ipfs turned out to be meh at best, and the crypto market ended up being even easier to manipulate than fiat finance, you got like 5 whales deciding when to pump and when to dumb, everybody else has to rely on luck to not get JUST

That could be verified with a third party checking that theres no tampering

Whoever is taking my money for this supposed privacy cannot guarantee that privacy, even under sworn affidavit and a genuine effort. This is why I don't buy into the VPN meme. Unless you're in their building with complete sysop access, you can't make any guarantee that they aren't using their position as content middleman to spy on you. Even then, there's no guarantee that the feds aren't directly spying on them, too, and in turn, you. If I was a fed, I'd do that.

Live by the mantra of trust nothing and use minimally. If you have to make an account somewhere, fake all of your credentials, unless you can't. Have few devices, and of the ones you do have, make sure they have some level of obscurity to them. Softphones over Smartphones are a good example. If you have a laptop, simless and properly configured smartphone, tablet or a small wifi enabled device that does Telephony and SMS/MMS over the internet (SIP/VOIP), with a service that lets you pick your own encryption level and type, that alone is FAR more secure than having a smartphone with its own SIM/service plan on it. If you need a cellular connection, get a portable hotspot and use that with your softphone. That way, you can remain at least one degree of separation from direct surveillance. Since your calls AREN'T truly going through a cellular network, TPTB can't directly tap you using a Stingray or other IMSICD. You're cellularly connecting to a Telephony protocol over the internet, using an encryption method they won't find out about until it's too late. You can add as many steps to this process as you want, even using VPNs, although, I wouldn't.

Do needlessly complicated and elaborate rituals when making your network connections, and you can usually thwart the plans of anyone that glows in the dark. Save your bomb making plans onto the EEPROM of a SEGA Genesis Cartridge. Fuck 'em.
