Julian Gollop, who created the original X-Com games and, more recently, Chaos Reborn, has announced a new game, called Phoenix Point.

Nothing else about the game is currently known, but the teaser image reminds me of something Gollop once said during his AMA:

After the first X-COM I was so worn out by the development that I wanted to do something in a new direction. I proposed an X-COM style game based on a kind of Lovecraftian Chthulu mythos set in the 1930s with cults, portals into a parallel world and Nazis.

OK GAMERS, we've got some updated concept art here.

"Your soldiers can target specific parts of a monster to achieve different effects. The Crab Queen has a black mist ejecter in its abdomen. If it is disabled the queen will no longer be able to eject mist which summons reinforcements and gives them cover. Shooting out its face will send it into a blind frenzy, rendering it unable to direct attacks or movement."

"An alien mutated organism with human and crab elements combined to make a formidable close combat foe"

"A hideous beast, pregnant with a swarm of alien minions within its belly."

looks like Terror From The Deep lol

This is extremely my shit. will it be in an engine similar to the newer xcom games or the older ones?

That concept art is all we have atm. I would guess it would be closer to the older X-Com games though.

Exclusive teaser trailer:

But in all seriousness, I'd love a new game in the classic XCOM style. Xenonauts was okay but I'd love a new motif aside from the UFO invasion thing and the Lovecraft/WWII thing sounds like just what I need.

It's been a long time, but I figure recent developments should re-energize this thread. Gollop's finally gone public with his plans and started up a crowdfund, albeit on Fig this time:

The ideas behind the game look quite cool and the campaign's managed to blow past its initial goals with more than 30 days to go; I think this might be a crowdfunding success rather than a failure. They're also updating almost daily with info and art, and plan to rig up an in-game footage demo once they have a boss working.

It will have actual projectile physics, which were absent from nuxcom and the crap that took after it so that's promising.

But it's fig and unity, so I'm not getting my hopes up until I see proper game footage.
