xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, has posted a new job listing for a Waifu engineer, just days after unveiling its AI companions for Grok, including an anime character named Ani.
Ani is one of several personalities recently introduced as part of xAI’s new companion system for its chatbot, Grok. The feature lets users interact with AI personas designed around specific archetypes or interests.
Ani, described as an “anime girl,” quickly gained attention online, with users comparing her appearance to Misa Amane from Death Note.
The job listing, posted on the xAI careers page, asks for developers with experience in full-stack systems, front-end interactivity, and real-time performance — all in the context of “building the most engaging waifu in the world.”
Part of a broader AI personality push
This new hire appears to be part of a broader strategy by xAI to offer customizable AI personalities that cater to specific user preferences.
Grok’s companion system includes multiple personas ranging from historical figures to stylized characters like Ani. According to the listing, the engineer would work on tools and infrastructure enabling advanced character expression, including voice, animation, and behavior modeling.
The job post also emphasizes a strong engineering culture, noting that “everything from core LLM backend integrations to delightful frontend experiences” will fall under the new hire’s responsibilities.
Ani isn’t the only companion launched by xAI over the last few days, either. Bad Ruby, an animated panda, had to be nerfed by Musk after it went viral for savagely roasting users.
