Xbox Game Studios Stupidity Hate Thread Game Pass Edition

Imagine you spend thousands of dollars on games as your top hobby. Then the trillion dollar company whose ecosystem you are invested in to the tune of thousands of dollars proceeds to destroy itself in the span of a few years. And now you won't be able to purchase any more controllers, consoles, or games for that platform anymore. And if your system dies there are no simple ways to back up your data that are easy for average users. And if your controllers die it becomes more and more difficult to repair or replace them.
Yeah, this is how gaming was up until 10 4 years ago.

Hell, it's how gaming still is outside of Xbox. It isn't like anything on PS3 worked with PS4 or PS5.

Edit: This isn't even getting into the fact they haven't announced anything except they are selling games on PS5 now.

Things were relatively easier when Sega quit the console market twenty plus years ago. Many of their IPs went third party for the sixth generation. Back then, you could find a Dreamcast or Sega Genesis for cheap with a bundle of games to be entertained on your respective console. Now, it's arguably easier thanks to emulation being readily available for those older titles.

With Xbox focused on an online ecosystem, it's easier to lose access to your titles because you'd need to authenticate your access through Xbox Live. Have a game delisted? Better hope you'd bought it and have the account associated with it if it's not a disc copy? Get banned from Xbox for whatever reason? Say bye-bye to your digital purchases. Some games now even require an online connection to download the rest or fix game-breaking bugs.

UE5 is a scam.
its not, its just that Epic knows gaming is dead and people are going to be using GPUs and "gaming engines" for CGI and AI and making their own films instead. "gaming cards" are being brought up by corporations for uses beyond video games now, gamers in a way are dead/dying compared to the other use cases.
That is like burning your lucrative business to use the insurance pay-out to fund an experimental side-gig.
thats technically what netflix did by going all-in on streaming way back in 2006. yet it paid off hilariously well, you really think no other company would have thought to stream? they could have gone the way of redbox instead, but did this and it paid off, and the main reason they were able to do it was that they saw how good the tech has become.
they wouldn't just build a PC to play these games.
during the gpu shortage of the early 2020s it was cheaper to buy a microcenter pre-built than build your own because the cost of a scalped 3080 was the same as the entire pre-built at that point.
Now I want to know why Xbox Live was the color orange.
color symmetry, green and orange just fit well.
and that man's name? jesus
Unreal is so popular
unreal 3 was the only good one right? I remember Timmy coded all of unreal 1 by himself, but 3 is where it seems everyone used it. i remember gears and arkham famously did

If gaming is dead, then the same could be said about Hollywood. Things are not too good in Lalaland, right now. This might have worked for Netflix but it was still a gamble that could have backfired for many reasons. Diversifying is nice and all but destroying their dayjob is unnecessarily risky.

I don't think people here are aware of how bad it is these days. Many, many studios have closed or are at 1/5th their former staffing levels. Famous flops we can all see but years of grinding down the amount of money anyone makes due to streaming and the post-corona hell scape being no prospect for real profit is taking out almost everything, it's rare to see profitable projects between movies / live action tv / animated tv, and a unicorn to see a profit that justifies the work having been greenlit.

A few years ago a studio laying off most of it's animators or never calling back talent was getting absorbed by the fast growing video game space. Now that's also looking at a grim financial future, many creative types are out of work with no prospects.

I'd say gaming is in a better position than Hollywood. The amount the average person wastes on games, including mobile ones, is far greater than films. However video gaming service model doomed its growth, since a fuckton of money is wasted on maintaining existing service games or competing against them.

The decision to make the Series S weaker feels like it was made by the higher-ups without caring for what the studios might have to say. It screams "We hear what you have to say but we are moving forward with our decision anyway" to me.
funny enough lower specs aren't an issue on PC.
then you look at some of the recent PC releases which are a bloated, unoptimized mess more often then not, I highly doubt it's the underpowered hardware's fault...

Since Activision and Blizzard is a part of Xbox game studios now, its about to get worse, much worse.

As far as the idea that DEI Officers are installed on every development team, the company’s President Rob Kostich declared as part of the company’s 2023-2024 Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Report that “Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DE&I) is a critical component of our future success. Our journey toward fostering DE&I began years ago, fueled by the passion and stories shared by our employees. To fulfill our vision of becoming the most inclusive blockbuster games company, we have embedded DE&I in every aspect of our operations.”

Kostich added, “We strive to create an environment where our talented employees can thrive and do the best work of their lives, and by integrating DE&I into our game development process, we can evolve our games to better resonate with abroader audience and to better foster community around the world. Every initiative we undertake is driven by the belief that we are building a better future – for our people and our players.”

He continued, “Embracing diverse perspectives is not only the right thing to do, but it also enables us to make informed decisions that shape the future of gaming and entertainment. It is an exciting time to now be a part of Xbox, who shares our perspective and commitment. While we acknowledge that there is still work to be done, we always embrace the challenge of continuous improvement. ‘Champion DE&I’ became one of our core values because of the unwavering passion and dedication of our exceptional employees, and it will remain a core focus of ours to help fuel our future growth.”

IGN tried pushing the fact that Avowed is locked at 30fps as a good thing. Devs can't optimize games for shit now, and IGN commentors are baffled as to why I called it DEI slop. Maybe it has something to do with the devs working on it can't code for shit. Avowed is going to be a gay, shitty version of Skyrim. Mark my words.

The best thing about Xbox consoles dying is getting to see the weird reactions as Xbots have to make the choice between putting two braincells together and follow a guide to building a PC or joining the Playstation cult they've cultivated a fanatical hatred for over the past two decades.

I mean, the choice to me was clear. I built a decent little low end rig and gave my Series X to a friend of mine who works for a living and didn't really have the time to build a PC himself. I still have a PS5 (only God knows why at this point), but the games I play on it are sports titles that don't have a PC port (College Football, MLB). I didn't see any point in having a PC AND a Series X since both platforms would have Game Pass shit on day one. All I have to do is keep up my Game Pass Ultimate subscription and I'm good. I knew the writing was going to be on the wall the moment Sony pivoted on their PC stance. The only question I had (as a former Xbox guy) was how I was going to part out my PC for potential upgrades. Though, I think I might just end up building a new rig in the next year once I get a few things paid off. For now, the Ryzen 5 5600 + RX 580 is good enough to play a lot of older titles I'm currently rediscovering.

There's literally at least 3 or 4 generations of games that current configuration of mine can play. Microsoft can pay lip service all they want to about how they give a shit about backwards compatibility, but for TRUE game preservation enthusiasts, PC really is the way to go.

If I wanted to play Skyrim with Guns, I'd just play Far Cry 3.
