Xbox introduces default remote shut down in consoles to fight climate change - We not only hold ourselves accountable to the carbon emissions... but to the emissions created with the use of our products in the homes of our fans

Doesn't the Xbox have an auto shutdown feature already? And what about downloading massive games?
You have to understand the double speak of what they are saying to really understand what they are doing. The consoles automatic shut down that exists now is something intrinsic to the device itself. It's something you are in full control of, that you can modify in the device settings if you want.

What this is, is essentially giving command authority of the device you own to the manufacturer. Microsoft, for reasons only known to them, can order the device to shut down. And STAY shut down.

They are couching this in terms of carbon emissions control, but this power essentially gives Microsoft an exclusive right to shut you out of a 500 dollar device in your living room. A device you now LEASE from them rather then own.

You could've picked a better source. I'm going to pull a Marissa Moira here and say that this is an overreaction waiting to be politicized. It's still in beta, and they have the option to revert back into their previous settings.

Fox News needs to calm down. They don't even PLAY games.

Imo we should not give them the benefit of the doubt and point out what it actually does rather than what they say it does.

Well now I'm just going to leave my Xbox on for an extra few hours daily out of spite. Might just have to dig out my old 360 and run it a bit for shits and giggles.
Run up your electric bill and ruin your console to own the eco terrorists.

From Xbox's carbon statement:

Improved sustainability with “Active hours” and Sleep

Another energy setting update that will start to roll out to Xbox Insiders today is the new “Active hours” setting. For those that select the Sleep power option, you can now adjust your console’s active hours. Your Xbox will boot quickly and will be available for remote wake during your selected active hours. When your Xbox’s active hours are done for the day, it will fully shut down and will draw 0.5 W vs. 10-15 W while active.

  • Xbox Series X|S active hours will be automatically enabled and scheduled based on times when the console was previously used
  • Xbox One consoles will have the option to configure their active hours, which will default to “always active” unless changed

This part concerns me. It says that Xbox Series S|X consoles would automatically detect "active hours" per usage. I hope MS adds an option to turn that off. Sounds like paternal controls.

Are you actually damaging consoles, TVs and PCs if you leave them on 24/7 so the cold weather doesnt effect them?

That right there is the issue. It's the boiling of the frog. They won't remotely shut your console down! Oh no. They will just "monitor its power use", and send orders for when to turn off based on that!

A device where someone else can remotely change the settings is a device you do not own.

Come ON @The Last Stand , read nigga, READ! Ignore what they SAY it does and actually read what it does!

What does carbon have to do with electricity?
afaik "Carbon emissions" is a catch-all term that covers all kinds of emissions, considering carbon is a raw element that makes up tons and tons of things, including all life. Someone gets cremated, the ashes they leave behind are made up from the same carbon that constructed their bodies, but the rest gets puffed out into smoke that goes into the air and has to go somewhere. Electricity's gotta come from a source, and something's gotta be consumed to generate power.

I don't wanna look this kinda thing up anymore because I just don't wanna see a bunch of flat art with flowery oversimplified language for idiots on Reddit to pretend like they understand how electricity's made. But basically every time you take a dump you can literally call that a "carbon emission", because you are emitting a carbon-based object from your body.

Of course, any time I hear "muh carbon emissions", I always think about how many rare earth elements and Chinese slave labor go into making electronics, many of which will end up in landfills within 5 years, and I laugh, because if I don't laugh, I'll cry.
