Is he even following the E3 coverage, analysis from the pundits, or mass debating of the fans? Most of the coverage was for sequels of franchises he doesn't seem to care about. I wouldn't blame anyone for not paying a whole lot of attention, if they don't have a hardon for sequels.
A lot of his hatred of the original Xbox was surprisingly original, in that he wasn't directly parroting a lot of the detractors during the Xbox vs. PS2 vs. DC flamewar. Ditto with 360 vs. PS3. He seemed to came up with his own weird justifications (making one or two reasonable points). Or maybe he was trying to parrot back flamewar stuff, but just botched it up. Either way, it's a little hard to guess what's influencing him, if indeed he's jumping on a bandwagon due to popular opinion. Coverage is way better now, though. Mainstream nightly news was covering E3, which wasn't the case back in 2006. Maybe he might be more initiated in the discussion, if he catches it on TV or follows some kind of news feed on his iPhone.
