Xbox Is Now the Betamax of Gaming Consoles

Xbox, the youngest of the extant major console brands, has been having a rough time over the past few years, with flagging sales and lackluster content starting with the Xbox One and dipping even further into the doldrums with the Xbox Series consoles.

In many ways, the so-called "console wars" are like the format wars of yore, and in this story Xbox is Betamax or, ironically, HD-DVD.

Ironically, Betamax was a Sony format 😆

It's speculated now that Microsoft is working on adding Steam to the Microsoft Store. I believe Xbox is connected to the Microsoft Store, so theoretically, you could play your Steam library on an Xbox. It's already compatible with KB+M inputs.

This tells me that MS wants Xbox to be an encompassing brand, not just a gaming console itself. The Microsoft Store has a lot of DRM and restrictions with it compared to just downloading applications. I see them trying to bridge the gap, maybe they're trying to have Xbox compete with the Steam Deck. I don't know, this seems too messy to work in practice.

So it begins, Target the 2nd largest retailer behind Walmart, is no longer selling Xbox Series X 1TB Disc Drive model ($599) and Xbox Series X 2TB Disc Drive model ($729) in its online store.

I'm glad I was able to obtain an Xbox Series X for under $400 when I was able to. Sad thing about the reality of gaming is that the game included is synced with the console, not a physical copy.

All things considered, I'm content with what the Xbox Series X and Game Pass provides for my day-to-day, but I cannot ignore that Microsoft has lost the plot of what it means to be a console manufacturer and developer/publisher.

If anything, this shows that Microsoft's philosophy in life is centered around software. Them buying studios and IPs since their inception is proof that MS looks at their competition the wrong way. It's not enough to buy studios to garner success; you need to use those studios to create original ideas for them to compete and give reason TO buy an Xbox.

They had that mindset perfected with the Xbox 360; albeit with only three franchises.

Finally, a steam deck with an inferior operating system that has a one hour battery life and overheating issues. This is what we really needed right now and it's a big step in the right direction for Xbox™.
Seriously, who asked for this? Isn't Xbox always last in console sales? They just don't have the user base to keep a handheld from flopping.

Also it dont play native Xbox games, its basically a handheld Window pc with a Xbox logo slapped on it. You can expect a price point around $799 for that ROG Xbox Ally X. Who is this for really?, the Xbox player that have gamepass and own a Xbox SS/SX??.. i dont see them getting into this. This looks more like to get the PC players on board with the Xbox brand, so they can sell them Xbox as a PC and compete with SteamOS.

That’s exactly why they’re doing this.

Now ROG is taking the risk on the hardware. Microsoft gets a check for the Windows license and the Xbox badge for zero effort expended.

So Xbox is dead and is now basically a PC with Windows. You dont get more snake oil sales man than this, RIP Xbox.

Xbox announces next-gen AMD deal, says future devices ‘won’t be tied to a single store’

AMD chips power the current Xbox Series consoles, as well as the upcoming Xbox-branded portable PC, the Xbox ROG Ally. The latter runs a new Xbox UI on top of Windows, allowing users to access other game stores, such as Steam.

It’s possible Xbox’s other future devices will adopt a similar approach, with Bond stating that Microsoft’s gaming arm is “working closely” with the Windows team, to ensure that Windows is “the number one platform for gaming”.

I thought they worked closely with the Windows team since XBox runs Windows?

That's not the point.

Windows 11 is the most bloated piece of shit ever to where it's actually turning users away from Windows forever. That isn't even including the fact that every new video card and driver for said cards have been crapping the bed and performing much worse, especially on Windows.

This nigger bitch is pulling a "this is fine" meme. The entire microsoft brand is imploding and she has the absolute audacity to say "WINDOWS WILL BE DA BEST VYDYA PLATFORM EVA!!!11!1". She doesn't just deserve to be fired, but hung from the fucking balconies for her blatant stupidity.

Well Gabe did nothing and won.

I love my humble little Series S. Plays games at 1080p/30, which is all I really need anymore. I have a (weak) PC for stuff that doesn't run on it (Valve games mainly) but it's a great device that lets me compartmentalize my gaming for the most part.
I really don't know how it got this bad. It's like the ripple effects of that 2013 Xbone launch disaster are still there. And I know this is old news, but who in their right mind is going to buy a fucking Xbox after that price increase? I paid $250 for my Series S (brand new) in 2022, no way in Hell it's worth $375.
It's a really sad situation.

Microsoft are basically back with their GFWL (Games for Windows LIVE) but now its branded Xbox Windows. So the old battle from 2007 GFWL and Steam is back on again. Microsoft have their own massive game catalog and PC hardware and they are gonna go hard on Gabes steam and use Xbox windows as the trojan horse. I will not be surprised if they start to release their games first on gamepass then on steam later or if at all. I also expect that the native gamepass for Xbox hardware will be slowly phased out and turned into the full PC gamepass version. This is after all how you play anywhere as they advertise about now days.

No one is gonna buy it thats what they hope for by the look of it. They are phasing out all the Xbox hardware and going full PC.

I hope forgodsake that SteamOS will win the battle, Linux is the way to go when it comes to PC gaming, Windows have always been a bottle neck for PC gaming.

i can see them shift their Steam game release to six months after release on Xbox and gamepass. But i doubt they will stop releasing games on Steam.

I’m wondering what the next gen xbox is going to look like next year? Will it be a console or full pc?
