You'd think with the crazy drug cocktail she was on she'd come up with a more interesting book than Surface Breaks but with gay space Greeks *sigh*

(I can't believe they're editing it in chunks, like wouldn't you want the whole manuscript before telling the writer they may need to rearrange or cut things? It's wild.)

It sounds SUPER weird, I handed my manuscripts in complete. (For those late to the party and my PL - I published a YA trilogy with a Big 5 publisher recently)

The only time I've heard of "chunks" is if the author is super slow, and as a performance management tactic they're allowed to hand it in bit by bit. It would make for a super disjointed book though, sometimes you have to have the whole thing in front of you and then edit from there.

A book Tuber (Reads with Rachel) read the ARC and it was pretty SHIT, but you have to remember that we are at the peak of the Romantasy genre in YA at the moment - on one hand it's super easy to get published if you hit the standard "so hot right now" marketing points (romantic fantasy, Greek Retellings, mild LGBTQ shit but not too gay, Reylo)

BUT BUT BUT, this thing is what happens to every maturing cycle - its so easy to get published in a certain genre that at some stage even the absolute garbage gets published, and readers start to get jaded. We're in the part where the garbage is going to start polluting the Romantasy ecosystem by the end of the year, and readers will turn to a new, fresher genre. The trick is for writers... which one? If a writer gets a new series bought tomorrow, it wont be on shelves until the end of 2025, start of 2026, and dollars to donuts the whole scene will be different.

Vampires have not come back (Jay Kristoff made a big effort, but no dice), witches were a flash in the pan around and just after the pandemic. Dark Academia was fairly niche for a couple of years but never quite escaped the churn with a BIG VIRAL BOOK that re-set the landscape (Think Twilight for Vampires, Hunger Games for Distopian, Iron Flame for Romantasy) even with the massive push that Babel got. Epic Fantasy was a thing in the tail end of the GoT era, but nothing managed to truly break out.

Cait Corrain is back in the news to cry about how anti-autism drugs made her review bomb her peers. Also discusses being Jewish, getting drunk, and having an alternate personality who did all the review bombing. There are also mentions of Xiran Jay Zhao.
This won't do her any favours - the authors she reviewbombed will just use this article as proof of how the huwyte media prioritises White Womens Tears(TM) over the traumatic lived experience of Women of Color.

Also note how they lead on how the people she reviewbombed were not white. Nice microcosm of our times - yeah they might have engaged in unethical practices to get ahead at the expense of others, but worst of all they did it to POC!

Kristoff is someone who I'm surprised the woke mob hasn't ever come for (that I've heard about, at least.)

I've seen some bitching about that Tokugawa-Japan-inspired steampunk trilogy he did at the start of his career, but surprisingly little considering he's a white man who dared to write a book from the perspective of a teenage Asian girl.

Most of the biggest names in publishing are basically immune to cancel culture so long as they aren't explicitly "anti-woke" in their public statements like Jo Rowling is, as long as their written work doesn't cross certain thresholds. She is, in fact, the perfect example of this. The Harry Potter books contain many things that you would imagine the stereotype of a woke person to object to:

"Fat shaming": Happens to multiple characters Harry doesn't like. Biggest example being Dudley, who is descdibed in the latter books as "growing in the wrong direction," and this is connected to him being a glutton. Umbridge is also described as being fat, as is Crabbe & Goyle.

Mocking SJW's: Hermione with S.P.E.W. is seen as a parody of white woke girls. Her hunger strike in Goblet of Fire on behalf of the house elves is mocked by every other character. The minority she is advocating actually enjoys their condition and don't want to be freed.

Women with "male" physical features tend to be villains: See Rita Skeeter, Petunia, Marge, Umbridge, etc. And Pansy, while not described as manly, is not feminine either, described as ugly, shrill, and pugfaced.

Leftist YouTuber Shaun has an hour long video going over more issues.

And yet, and yet...

Most SJW's LOVED Harry Potter and would defend it from the view SJW's who had complaints. Frankly, it was the right who were trying to cancel Harry Potter back in the day, due to witchcraft and much later due to Rowling opposing BREXIT & Trump. On 4CHAN, being called a Potterhead was one of the worst things you could be called.

It was not until Rowling became outspoken against the trans folks that the left turned on her. Nowadays, people who never cared about how house elves were depicted in the Harry Potter adventures are complaining about it.

If Kristoff starts praising Trump, well, then he'll be canceled for that & for cultural appropriation. But otherwise, he's safe.

The truth that some of you might not realize is that nine out of ten SJW's are perfectly fine with certain cultural appropriation tropes and many other "microaggresions" that you think they wouldn't be fine with. Number ten will whine & complain & get mocked on Twitter, but they won't get reinforcements from the nine unless something big changes in the books or areal life threshold is crossed.

P.S. And even after all that, J.K. Rowling still is too big to cancel. And to add more emphasis to that, there are still to this day, woke Harry Potter fans (only now, it's one of ten rather than the whole nine of ten) who hate Rowling but who still like her world.

IIRC there was a Japanese translation that was fairly popular. But, yeah, pretty sure there's goodreads reviews that hit on every "problematic" point.

And for better or ill I really enjoyed the full cast audiobook recording of The Illuminae Files as a Space Opera, with some YA elements shoehorned in that did nothing for the book.

Heres a nyt article with a bunch of leaked emails about the chengdu disaster...
Edit: I didnt read the article and thought the NYT would do some actual journalism,
Heres the actual details
I still find it cute how the Hugos go around the world pretending they’re still a significant cultural marker for genre literature and not an American catlady get-together.

(:_(Too true… I almost wish I can be as naive as I used to be when I started out reading literature. “Wow, this got a reward? I wish to be as half as good as this author!”

"No, only moids can be into dirty disgusting porn!" The bitching about porn and problematic erotica is hilarious, kek (I can't believe some of them still use that unironically).
It is landing somewhat, because every saucy romantasy novel now has to have a stupidly long and on the nose 'consent establishment' moment that completely removes any passion out of the scene

If I didn't already know the Hugos had turned into a fucking joke, this would have cemented that idea for me. I like how Sanford was pontificating about how "these people forgot it's not supposed to be a popularity contest" when that's really all it's been for about the last 10-15 years.

Ehhh, hasn’t even been a popularity contest, it’s been virtue signaling only. Plenty of the authors are pretty much “literal whos?” by sales volume at least, even if they are heavily promoted on social media and the like.

Which is what I was trying to explain to Josh and company on the MATI thread once but there isn't any autism like simping autism.

(j/k but seriously brains lock up when women get involved)

I remember when this guy used to be a BAP orbiter, acting as part of a "dissident right" nerd group that was going to win the culture war against the woke. Now he's just a contrarian who doesn't understand terms like "YA." Screenshot_20240221_074249_Chrome.jpg
