Younger Generations

Well, on a more superficial note, I like today's generation because home video systems are improving quite a lot. With HD and digital copies, we will no longer have to deal with this NTSC and PAL bullshit (though unfortunately, there are still region blocks). What I hate about living in a PAL country is the fact that everything plays 4% faster and at a high pitch than normal which you don't notice at first, but it can become REALLY distracting when you DO know about it.

People of all generations vary in levels of politeness and goodness. That is all I have to say.

I agree completely. I work in a profession that has a large section of young people (20s-30s) we get along great, have the same goals and mostly the same interests, they like that I'm a geek geezer who holds all the stories of "the old days" before cable TV and they constantlly surprise me with things like "Herman Melville is my favorite author" or long discussions of who their favorite Directors of Photograghy are. Meanwhile, my executive producer is fucking around with her facebook page playing Farmville. Trombonista's got it right.

This has been going on since the beginning of time. Here's a quote from Aristotle:

"They [Young People] have exalted notions, because they have not been humbled by life or learned its necessary limitations; moreover, their hopeful disposition makes them think themselves equal to great things -- and that means having exalted notions. They would always rather do noble deeds than useful ones: Their lives are regulated more by moral feeling than by reasoning -- all their mistakes are in the direction of doing things excessively and vehemently. They overdo everything -- they love too much, hate too much, and the same with everything else."

It's become even worse. There used to be only 3 formats (VHS, PAL and I forget the exact acronym, it's basically PAL for communists).
Now we have, what, 8 regions? Yes, with software this is easy to bypass, but actual DVD players generally won't read a DVD from another region.
SO THERE

^oh you mean the whole Region 0/4 PAL crap which means that even if you live in Australia, you still can't play a UK DVD (despite being PAL)? Good point. Well, there are region-free players that more people are buying now and Blu-ray only has 3 regions (A/B/C). Many Blu-ray releases tend to be ABC which means they're region-free. Plus, we live in a time when we can download shit for free!!!! :ween: :ween: :ween:

(and did you mean SECAM? That region format is sooo typically French.)

SECAM sounds familiar, but I'm not sure if that was the broadcast standard I was thinking of.
From what I can remember, it was a broadcast format that used basic PAL, but it was scrambled so only sets with a certain configuration could receive the signals.
It was a means for communist/fascist countries to regulate what the populace could watch.
I'm sure some form of this still exists, but it'll be way different than when I learned about shit, nigh a decade ago.

It was like:
NTSC, PAL, SECAM, sPAL <- im making that one up because I don't remember it.
Perhaps it IS SECAM, but I would have to read more about it. Given it's saturday night, I'll have to add this to my "to do" list that I never see again :(

It's SECAM. Most stuff theses days is Universal though.

"When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful and impatient of restraint".
Hesiod, 8th century BC

"What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?"
Plato, 4th Century BC

"The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint... As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress."
Attributed to Peter the Hermit, AD 1274

“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.”
Socrates, 4th Century BC

By the way, teen pregnancy hit a historic low not too long ago.

Socrates and Plato had a point; a lot of people consider them to have lived at the peak of Athenian culture. About twenty years after Plato died, Athens lost a war with Macedon, who suppressed their democracy. Athens was never the same. Perhaps the generation that Plato taught was decadent.

I don't take that view too seriously, though; that generation might just have been unlucky. And even if it were true for Athens in the 4th century BC, doesn't make it true for the West in the 21st century.

I think the next generation is going to be highly intelligent, refined, and empathetic, and the ones saying the newer generations are only going to get worse and worse are a bunch of immature shits that don't like change. Sorry, but it's true, the 90's, 80's, 70's, etc., suck much more than the future will. Honestly, who wants to live in a decade where DOMA is constitutional and police officers beat men of color for literally no reason? That sounds like garbage, and it makes the people who lived in that decade sound like garbage.
The 2010s were the shit, son. Let me lay it down for you...

When I was your age, the economy sucked and Congress didn't do jack shit about it. In fact, the head start cuts are probably why you spent 3 years in the fourth grade!

When I was your age, people died of easily preventable diseases due to a lack of health insurance. Often, you couldn't even buy health insurance due to "Preexisting Conditions." Even if you had health insurance, you still got fucked over very often! We lived on the edge, child!

When I was your age, I had to buy my pot from a dealer! It was so much fun to participate in the whole stoner subculture, yo... it was an outing with friends in the suspense of night! Especially for the blacks, who could risk life imprisonment in the cities! You kids have it so easy with your liquor-store corporate weed! Back in my day people killed each other over the Mexican border to smuggle sweet ganja!

When I was your age, most people would look down on you if you happened to prefer the same sex. It was serious fucking business. You couldn't marry, adopt, or join the military. In school, you'd get shunned by even your own teachers and forced to wallow in sin! Funny people would lynch you and picket your funerals. The masochism of prejudice was so hardcore, yo!

Young people and kids suck.

Are you one of them?

Than you suck.

You kids are tearing this country apart.
