GitHub Warns Users Reposting YouTube-DL They Could Be Banned
When the RIAA filed a copyright complaint with Github targeting YouTube-DL, large numbers of angry developers and users aired their displeasure by reposting the contentious code to Github. While Github says it wants to help the project come back online, the platform is now warning that users reposting its code could find their accounts suspended and potentially banned.

COUNTER CLAIM HAS BEEN FILED
According to 17 USC 512(f) and 17 USC [1701 or 1201 we're not sure]

CEO of GitHub weighs in on the situation
“GitHub exists to help developers. We never want to interfere with their work. We want to help the youtube-dl maintainers defeat the DMCA claim so that we can restore the repo,” Friedman told TorrentFreak, explaining his actions.

It’s clear that GitHub exists to help developers. That said, for the company’s CEO to jump in and personally help someone to respond to a DMCA claim, is quite unprecedented. As it turns out, the RIAA’s notice ticked off Friedman as well.

“This one annoyed me,” Friedman says.

“Perhaps because of the importance of tools like youtube-dl for archivists, and our related archive program and funding of the Internet Archive: We are thinking about how GitHub can proactively help developers in more DMCA cases going forward, and take a more active role in reforming/repealing 1201.”

GitHub’s CEO suggested that YouTube-DL won’t be reinstated in its original form. But, the software may be able to return without the rolling cipher circumvention code and the examples of how to download copyrighted material.

I'm pretty sure the code is not infringing on any copyrights though, if Youtube has issues with it being used to access their website, they should say something, but how's it a DMCA problem?
It seems like the reason they thought this had legs was because one of the examples youtube-dl had in its readme was one where copyrighted content was downloaded

I wonder what prompted them to just go after YT-DL, instead of actual infringing projects. I do find it quite hilarious though that there's no mention of any of the songs they brought up in the README.MD, my best guess is it's the URL's instead of the names but I really don't have the will power to look through it.

Just in case the code IS taken down, any chance @Null can mirror it? Or is the RIAA that dumb to go out of its way to try to yeet the Farms?
It wouldn't even matter. YouTube and youtube-dl have had an on-going cat and mouse game to keep the program working for years. Even if I archived the code, they'd just change it, and since I'm not a maintainer it'd fall out of usefulness. Even if it didn't, the RIAA would just DMCA me and I'd have to eat shit.

The NewPipe Extractor is very similar so it shouldn't be too hard for the community to fix since we'd just have to emulate whatever the NewPipe extractor is doing. https://github.com/TeamNewPipe/NewPipeExtractor

Never thought RIAA would be revelant again in 2020, fuck this year
They never went away, it seems like they're itching for a fight lately, Twitch's also ramped up its DMCA stuff presumably in response to something from them and now streamers are doing massive purges of their VODs so they don't get DMCA'd
