Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Watching the odd age-restricted video logged in (all other consumption is strictly through FreeTube, NewPipe or yt-dlp+mpv). What's with the incel slop it's recommending me?

I remember hearing some years back that they were rolling something like that out for political commentary (ie "we've detected sargon of akkad in your watch history, have some breadtube to even things out") so it wouldn't surprise me at all if they're doing it for other topics.
The "anti-rabbithole" algorithm appears to have three ideas about what it's supposed to do.

Mostly it sends you back to shit you've already watched. That can't "radicalize" you.

If it recommends related things, as it increasingly doesn't, it recommends more popular things, because those have been deemed safe by some other organ of the electronic jeet. The "pipeline" this is supposed to counteract is the one that used to lead you from Fox to Sargon to Alternative Hypothesis if you were interested in a subject that both normalfag and "extreme" righties made videos about. Now it goes the other way, from dissident to establishment.

(Incidentally this change made it so that if you watch, say, a Sonic Youth video, it'll never recommend obscure bands that Sonic Youth fans also like, like the Pain Teens or Lemon Kittens or whatever. "Discoverability" of music fucking died. Thanks Trump!)

If you watch something it thinks of as right-wing, it often directs you toward corrective leftslop. For some users that seems to have escaped politics and started directing them to shit they personally hate. Lately it's been doing it to me, always recommending the nearest thing it can find to whatever I just clicked "Do Not Recommend" on. (My particular peeve is people showing off the new old records they bought, so my front page is full of them.)

I've heard that internally YT doesn't know how any of this works. They make some rules and the code makes itself, with stupid results if they didn't phrase their genie wish carefully enough. They can't fix it, but they can wish again.

They've been doing tons of IP blocking lately, I'm having to change VPN nodes almost daily to watch videos on FreeTube. The oppresshun never ends :(
oh great they're fucking with freetube again. why can't they just be happy that 99% of their sheeps watch their videos with ads or pay them money to avoid it, why are they this desperate to get the final %?

Why does YT insist on putting videos from my "Watch later" list in my recommends? I know the video exists already, i put it into a playlist, i'll get around to watching it. Makes zero sense to me and drives me nuts when i scroll like three pages down and it's all shit from my "Watch later" list.
This annoys the hell out of me. It seems like there was a recent update that even increased the number of videos showing up from my Watch Later list.

I feel that they also increased the number of videos i have already watched in my recommends. I also don't need videos from my subscribed channels in my recommends, especially not those i've already watched. Just give the most basic of options and let me choose "no videos from my playlists" and the like. That "Not interested -> I already watched the video" feedback doesn't seem to work properly either as i have videos i already did that on still get recommended regularly.

I really need to sit down and set up Blocktube.

Those show-and-tell videos piss me off too. Thanks to (((content matching))), they're kinda pointless. Why would I want to hear about some late boomer/early Gen Xer's latest vinyl or CD haul if they can't/won't let the viewer sample the merchandise?

BlockTube is worth putting work into. It's so nice not to have the same channels recommended to me 3 months after I told YT not to recommend said channel.

I keep getting the gay 'disable your adblocker' message almost every time I try to watch anything. Using uBlock and Firefox. Every time it comes up I spam their complaint box with garbage about trying to watch big bob and vagene videos and I won't stop until they stop sending me the stupid message.

I originally saw this in the sharty thread, but apparently there used to be a thread somewhere on 4chan about this.

Some guy made two browser extentions that can "encrypt"/"decrypt" the audio and video of any YT clip and thus bypass the in-built censorship measures. He uploaded a real encrypted hentai as proof and currently that video sits at 5k views.
I couldn't get the extension to work in Firefox so if anyone is using Chrome, feel free to see if it works for yourself. Local archive below (though it's pretty much useless without the extension):

You know what I love about about the YouTube app? When YouTube randomly decides to just outright remove all the buttons at the bottom of the screen and in doing so making it impossible to access my profile or my subscriptions

Like look at this they removed the buttons
And I go looking at Twitter and a bunch of other people are having this problem as well

Every major corporate website has been getting shit lately due to the Jeets in IT shitting them up.

Went to Canadian Tire and instead of having the books with make and model numbers to look up oil and cabin air filters I had to access the mobile version of the website to look up product numbers. The site was total dogshit that barely functioned and was super slow.
