Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

Oh, cool. I was watching a video on youtube, and when the person said "subscribe," the outline of the subscribe button underneath the video lit up. How long has that been a thing? I normally watch videos on my phone.
That's been a thing for four or five months, I think. Of course, the button lights up in rainbow colors. UGH!

Why the fuck do Youtube shorts have so much fucking bullshit cluttering up the screen? I have Revanced, so that's why the downvotes exist. But do I really need to know it has "original sound"? Does it need to show the logo fucking twice? Does it need the fucking shop icon?! No!

Youtube is giving you a hint. Stop watching shorts, it's cattle content and it'll treat you as such with its UI.

Stop watching shorts, your attention span will thank you.

It would be nice if they didn't try to push it so fucking hard.

There are times when a Youtuber will make a short video guide like "How to make [thing] in [game]".

yt-dlp used to have a 22 format, which was a 720p mp4 file with both audio and video. Why is it gone now? I used to be able to get it to appear by doing the -F several times or by playing the video in question in 720p on youtube itself , but that doesn't seem to work anymore.

22 was a legacy format. YouTube probably has phased it out, along with 17 and 18.

Youtube updated something on their backend. It broke YT-DLP, Tubular, Newpipe, et. al. I think some piped/invidous instances are still working. They probably updated the git version of yt-dlp. the AUR / Chaotic-AUR yt-dlp git updated.

Yeah I haven't been able to watch shit for the past several hours with Freetube. Even before it stopped working, for a while youtube playlists were a bit fucky where the wrong video would play or in one case a random video showed up in a playlist that wasn't there in the playlist on actual youtube.

yt-dlp gives me more and more videos which VLC does not play properly, it says it requires a VP09 codec and only plays audio. I can confirm this is how it works with other playback programs, as well as when I drop the videos into a video editing program.
My online downloaders also usually require several downloads before I get a non-VP09 video with actual video on it. Is this a situation where the problem is on my end and I should download something or is this an issue everybody is hit by?

I downloaded a random video right now with Stacher (GUI for yt-dlp) and it works fine. In my case I don't mess with fancy prompts, I just use a preset that amounts to:
Code:
-f bestvideo[ext=mp4]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/best[ext=mp4]/best

Issues don't prop up in my media players nor VLC, but I noticed that my video editing software only reads audio from the videos. In that case a quick Handbrake conversion fixes the issue.

Can I get a quick TLDR on that?
A quick rundown you say?

Handbrake is an open source video conversion tool, available from here. It has a plethora of customization options for you to meddle with, but I just use a "Fast 1080p30" preset with a tweak to preserve 192 audio bitrate. Whatever it's doing under the hood fixes the underlying issues. You might get more out of it as it can batch convert, save custom presets, retain stuff like subtitles and chapters etc.

Thanks, hopefully this will fix my issues.
I found that an online downloader I haven't used in a long time actually works just fine, even downloads in 1080p and 720p that my usual ones(including yt-dlp) are having trouble with. Won't name it here, in case agents of evil(Google) are lurking here.

Where on earth did you find a VLC version that cant play VP9? Its ten years old and has been standard on youtube for years. Its been in libav for at least 10 years which vlc is built on top of

So what's the best alternative for Newpipe for the time being? Actually fuck it, I might just fully replace it because the devs always take way too fucking long to fix shit.

Maybe I'm hallucinating but I've noticed a ton of videos which previously had open comment sections are now suddenly disabled. The common theme seems to be that they are on 'family friendly' topics like G rated movies. Now disabling comments on videos aimed directly at kids like they have done for years is one thing. I personally think even this is overbearing. But this is a shit ton more videos and probably a sizeable percentage of their whole library. Its such a shame, those comment sections were the best part of the website. Has anyone else noticed this? I don't see any mentions of it in the media.

Also this isn't really youtube directly but Google just gimped their reverse image search so you can't use it on people anymore. So now catfishers and scammers who steal photos can get away scot free. Its like they are intentionally making the worst possible decisions all the time now.

Heard that Youtube is injecting ads directly into the bitstreams of videos.
I wonder if this will lose them their safe-harbor status in any copyright cases, as in copyright, one isn't a protected publisher if they "editorialize" the content that's served, and cutting many pieces of content into the middle of various videos sure does seem like editorializing...
